45g rimless

That’s going to be a nicely planted tank. I’m sure. When the future acro frags grow they will sillhouete against the back yard door. The dusk actinics turn the place into the BLUE ROOM.

Very nice. It looks clean and simple.

I got few pics of the first corals in the new tank. Everyone seems to be doing well. The diatoms have arrived, but I don’t expect them to be around for too long.

loooking SWEEEEEET

Hi Ellen, nice job on the new tank, really fantastic photos. Continued success.

It has been a while since I have posted an update on this tank. It is coming along nicely. I ended up adding a couple of difficult but very interesting species of fish. I have a pair of Oxymonacanthus longirostris, (orange spotted file fish), that I purchased from Blue Zoo Aquatics. These fish are awesome. For an advanced hobbyist looking for a challenge they are well worth the extra time and effort required to get them eating and acclimated. I have posted about my adventure with these two on Reef Geeks. The thread can be found here for those that are interested: http://www.reef-geeks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=442. The second species are a pair of Lythrypnus dalli, (Catalina gobies). The gobies are a cooler water fish so I am keeping them at a bit warmer temps. 75 F than is best for their long term health. I am debating setting up a smaller tank for these two so that I can get the temp down to 68-70F. They are doing well right now, but I know the warmer temps. will shorten their already short life span.

I am planning mostly lps, clams, and zoas for this tank. So far everything is doing well and I am seeing good growth. These pics are from the past month up to last night.

First the beautiful file fish

The gobies, you have to look for them as they are tiny:

Lookin real nice so far!!!

beautiful ellen. mom told me u stole 2 of my corals!! lol. that tooth i had to save from my angel that thought it was lunch. and ive been curious to see how that blasto colors up. looks like its gettin a lot of green already. very nice!!

Just a warning… Catalina gobies are from colder waters, and have a greatly reduced lifespan when kept at reef tempratures.

Thanks for the warning Icy. Did you read my post? I know what their requirements are. They are cool little fish. I could watch them for hours.

Yeah. I have read everything I could get my hands on. I hope they decide to spawn in my tank. I have talked to Chris and Barb about raising the fry. I think it would be super cool to see these guys being captive bred in larger numbers.

super cool? i think FN awesome is more like it!!! i cant recall 100% but arent these guys obligate coral eaters but the CB were raised on prepared food?

There is some debate going on right now by those that have been keeping these fish for a while. Matt Pedersen did the article in Coral mag and he disputes this theroy. He believes they are only obligate coral feeders in the wild because they cannot compete for other food sources. He does not think they need to consume coral in order to remain healthy. I can tell you that the two I have eat prepared foods with gusto and did not kill any of the sps frags that were placed in the tank for them to feed on. They will still nip at the sps, but they clearly prefer the foods I am offering.

I sure hope to get a chance at CB these fish.

Huh… nope, I completly missed that paragraph. ;D

Glad your files are eating prepared foods. Were they already trained to eat prepared when you got them or did you do the training?

I figured you missed that.
The files were in great shape when I got them, but not eating much except sps and a little live brine shrimp. I have them trained to eat just about anything now.
