algae infested gorgonian needs help

+1 My tangs have poked at HA before, but never took any interest. You can always sell off the sea hare once it has cleaned up the HA to another hobbiest that has some HA (like myself) or re sell it back to the LFS.
The HA is probably sucking any available nitrates/phosphates out of the water so your tests will show 0, but as soon as some is avail it will grow more and consume it. Ripping out the HA and trimming your macro will remove nutrients from the water and as they try to grow back they will consume more nutrients from the water.

I think you calcium reading is fine, but remember there are 4 things that go into play, ca, alk, mag, and sg those 4 are dependent upon each other and each effects the others so you should always look at and report all 4.

ian, i cannot test for mag yet. sg is 1.025-1.026 alk is 9.5 drops, ca as stated was 550.
less food is the route foir now.

"Phosphate might be the easiest with a good dose of GFO to absorb the phosphate. " what is GFO, ken? [/quote]

GFO stands for Granulated Ferric Oxide. It is the chemical name of a wide range of phosphate absorbtion medias sold by many companies, but is one of the two main means of chemical filtration of phosphates.

here’s the movie as requested. i tried to also show the koralia pointed at the gorgo. yes there are hermit crabs 2 of them eating leftover cyclops. no polyps out today. based on everything here, i guess there’s not much i can do.

Take a soft toothbrush to it. It looks as though it is isolated somewhat. If you damage tissue it may die. If the polyps stop extending it will die. I’d give it a shot, just be gentle.

although u are in a very tough situation, i am sure we can all agree that something is better than nothing. pick the solution that sounds like the most plausible idea and try it. just letting it go i am sure will not end well. if u break it, then u got some frags. if it dies, then nothing different will of happened than if u let it go. i say u gotta try SOMETHING…

Yeah, some gentle action with the toothbrush would probably work.

That looks like a non-photosynthetic gorgonian right? Why not put it in a dark part of the sump (if there is one) and let the algae die off?

Oh yes, you have some hair algae in the rest of the tank too. like icy said. GFO i granulated ferric hydroxide, a particular form of rust. its a very strong phosphate binder. Its been use used for a hundred years to treat municipal drinking water supplies for removal of arsenic and other heavy metals too. good stuff, but expensive. but a little goes a lot farther at removing phosphate than the white aluminum oxide beads.
