Buffer

Thanks, I’m no chemist for sure just knew what happened when I dosed.

well, The MSDS for Sodium Carbonate solution says its max PH is 11.6.

And the MSDS says Sodium Bicarbonate solution max PH is 8.3.

which explains why you add Sodium Bicarbonate(Baking Soda) just to boost alkalinity and not bump PH too much like he said, when also dosing Lime Water(PH12.5) . and use Sodium Carbonate alone for a bigger bump in PH than just Baking Soda alone. Sodium Carbonate(Washing Soda) is a stronger buffer and can cloud and precipitate your tank if you add too much at one time too fast. I just did that to my salt water barrel. OOPS?
