DIY LED

just in my case, there may be a diff reasoning. m,ine are hanging high, simply b/c i want the spread, since i saved $$ for now, and only use 2 modules of ai leds. less wattage per light wouldn’t allow that. right now i’m at about 80% whites and it’s nice. no corals hiding, no dispersion past the tank perimeters, lotsa light, pretty.

Here is a good reason to go with a good brand of LEDs vs a random start up company offering things cheap. Since we had discussed this recently and I happen to see an add for a company selling LEDs I thought I would check it out because I hadn’t heard of them.

At least when I clicked on the link above it went to a site with a long in, broken images, and it wasn’t in English even though the add was in English. Another start up down the drain?

Every company has to start somewhere, but sometimes you can just get a feel for a company and their products by how professional a company presents itself. I also hate being a guinea pig and trying out first run of even the most reputable brands equipment. If you don’t care if support my fall to the way side and you may have to fix things your self then why not DIYS? Just my two cents on it.

I don’t have time to research how to make these things do everything i want them to do.(as far as neat transitions, moonlight, and growing healthy corals), so for time being I’ll spending money with a brand name that has a proven product.

Besides not only have there been lots of guinea pigs around the world for AI fixtures for a long time… now I have Jared, Lindsay, and Paul as my local guinea pigs. So far Paul’s tank looks sweet! Can’t wait to see the growth results!

Well in all fairness Jon - the .eu at the end of the web address indicates it’s a company operating out of the European Union so you can’t necessarily expect their English to be as perfect as ours is. It could be a company out of the Czech Republic, Belgium, Itlay etc.

Now broken images and an ugly web site I’ll give you.

There was no footnote on the banner add I clicked on that said you would need a translator and a password cracker to see their site.

guys, i really investigated pacificsun and just felt funny about the way they were organized, distributed by only one place in nyc, and presold. seemed to me that in the 45 pages of the thread, and i went through it all during early 2010] that par was not accurately stated and mostly hedged, dependent on only the company’s vague charts, that only 2 people were really responding to questions [protection from salt water, upgradability, what happens if a single bulb goes, how to handle repairs, etc] and that the product had amazing controllability, but not much else.
there were frequent delays in the original shipment, taking over a month from payment to delivery in nyc, pacsun very quickly had a newer model w/ 3 watt bulbs, and soon after dropped the u.s. distributor. yesterday on r/c i find a guy who bought their premier line for $3700+. it came with one entire panel not working, a puck that was completely unglued [they use hot glue–eek!], and they will not honor the original warranty.
not my choice, and not based on their english. glad i went with the AI. so far. one of my modules went bad, contacted them directly, they sent me a new one immediately even though i had bought mine from aquacave. then b/c of my old man health, it took me 3 weeks to return the bad one–they never contacted me to ask where the hll it was. great customer service. seemingly the opposite of most companies today.

With this hobby it becomes very difficult to hide mistakes in customer service. It is also very easy to find the companies that stand behind their product and are quick to respond. Suppose that is the plus side to the forums.(Negatives being PLENTIFUL!)
