DRC site face lift time!

Regardless of what the passwords ect are stored as, you don’t go around sharing the database. A lot of information can be gathered from a database and in member’s interests, it is not something that should be taken lightly. Not saying anyone here is a bad guy or would do anything bad or that anyone is right or wrong decision, just not something to be taken lightly.

On making little tweeks here and there, these should not be done in a production environment. What is the best way to deter new members or contributers? Break the site so they can’t get to it.

  1. Database and ftp access shouldn’t be taken lightly.
  2. Changes need to happen on a test bed, not a live environment.
  3. Changes need to be hashed out, not rashly changed based on someones opinion. It’s a club right?

I think everyones ideas for changes are great, but should be hashed out before any changes or decisions are made, nothing worse than everytime you reload a page you get something different. Make changes on a test bed, let people review them, weigh in. Bring the changes over.

Here are some thoughts on what I would do.

If you are editing a file copy it so you have an original copy. If you are changing settings write down what you are changing.

The thing you need to remember is that we are using templates SMF, Joomla, some things we have no control over layout or placement. Not without substantial investigative work and customization.

For instance, moving a banner that is hosted through joomla and embedding in to a heading code hosted through SMF - can’t happen. This isn’t your daddy’s HTML code anymore (believe me I wish it were).

We can work on making changes and improvements but everyone needs to speak up with what theywant. We are going to continue to have articles of interest on the front page, we can link them to threads to make comments on, but until someone wants to step up and create a new TOTM process that’s the way it’s going to be.

You don’t want the RC link? - Fine. Gone.

So how about some content for the new site? No one willing to write an article?

Jon you’ve got a ton of information that you can share - I’m sure you can come up with a kick as$ article on QT, acclimation, lighting, plumbing, exotic animals, common reef misconceptions. Anything?

I’m open to redoing some things on the site but if I’m going to give it a face-lift I want to have more content to put on it.[/quote]

I will write about my antics this weekend, it should be entertaining at the very least.

So what happened / what’s about to happen?

Is there a way to get to the articles without knowing the exact URL? There was a library menu which you could get to the articles and hit next to get to the one you wanted

Is it possible to replace little stars and count of posts with link to members tank or page, so when you give your opinion/reply/answer, others can judge quality of it by looking at your tank. And not number of posts you wrote, which means nothing.

Rosti that can be done by using your avatar or by creating a custom signature.

Added the Library back. Sorry about that.

I’ve seen plenty of tanks on youtube and reef central containing what would appear to be beautiful corals, but everyone is extremely bright in color not because they’re healthy, but were freshly picked up at the LFS and are retracted. It’s often possible to be extremely knowledgeable, but not be able to afford an amazing aquarium. It’s also possible to swing together a beautiful staged aquarium that isn’t sustainable at all and isn’t kept for long before it begins to get taken over by algae and animals are lost. Actually most pictures and videos you see are not in stable aquariums kept up for long. I’ve seen amazing photos of corals with evidence on the rock around them of a dangerously high nutrient system. Nice camera, nice shot, doesn’t mean the photographer knows everything about aquariums. Just saying.

I do have to agree though that we could certainly lose the stars and 2000 Nassarius.

I think it should stay as a site with a CMS for the content adders, This is the web presence of our club not just a reef forum.

And it does not need to be a one fits all, we can have several themes and adjust what those themes show and give access to.

Craig did you change my avatar? It went back to this green guy you changed last time 3 years ago?///

Yea Craig, whats up with that?

Al - no I didn’t change your avatar. Of course I spent a good bit of time playing around with the backend stuff yesterday and there’s the possibility I reset something somewhere. I suddenly started getting reply notificaitons again. Had to go in to my personal preferences and shut them off.

Ken - we used to have this years ago and it was removed because people - xxownagexx to be exact - abused it. It’s a way to give credit, thanks, or reputation points to those that answer quesitons, post valuable informaiton, or are just generally helpful.

I say we have a vote at a meeting to get rid of “2000 Nassarius snail” and all the stars. I think it wouldn’t hurt as well to have the Post count removed from every single post you make and keep it in the members section. Personal opinion, but I think others share it enough that perhaps the majority would remove it.

Craig can you try to remove the second redundant logo and the redundant search button right next to the other one?

Total time logged on has got to go as well. Another broken feature of the site that doesn’t look good.

I just checked my post stats and it says i make most of my posts between 11 PM and 4 AM. Certified Night Owl.

I dont mind the post count displaying, but the merit badge(nassarious snails) for posts can go.

We’ll look at changing items on the test site, when it is up (should be by tonight). The only thing you suggested that will save space would be removing the second redundant logo, assuming the bar that is in is pulled as well.

Post count shouldn’t be removed IMO, it is a pretty common feature of message boards. Although it may be a mis representation of someone’s knowledge, it is a usually a good indicator of their dedication and participation on a board.
