Frag Plugs

Not trying to be a nae sayer just sharing my opinion. [/quote]

It appears I have ruffled some feathers with my opinion and I am sorry for that. I did not realize this was in the DIYS forum when I made my first several posts. Sorry I commented.

If you don’t want to do it, don’t. Beyond that, any opinions that involve the process would probably be appreciated.

The one thing this thread is missing which should be linked in for more information is this article written by Al.

Concrete in the Home Aquarium

I have a long response, but i dont have time to type it out right now, i will do it later…

a) im using cement not concrete, and yes there is a difference
b) 20g frag
c) to come later…

Okay, first i have a 20g tanks. I did not sell of all of my colonies and still have colonies of all my softies left. The majority of my SPS are mini colonies. the slimer, digi, frogskin, tealtip are all mini colonies that i could frag if i want.

I am not doing the frag plugs because i need a lot or its cheaper, its becuse i want to. 15 frag plugs from BAF runs u 8 bucks. For 30 plugs from BAF i bought enough material to make somewhere in the range of 3-6 thousand plugs. not that i need that many, its just easier. I have made somewhere near 300 plugs and disks so far, and im only curing 120, because the other ones were not up to par. The disks are all the same and look just as nice as the BAF, which do break down over time. They are made of cement and small stones but are hard like would be found in chemical concrete.

I picked up a phosphate meter too, really cheap…

Here is my expenditures:

9 bucks for Portland cement
4 bucks for sand
+tax

i will put pictures up soon…

tax!?!?

He lives about 60 seconds into PA.

Yep, lol… Actually my deck is in pa, along with my backyard… We can get awaywith dE liscense plates through parents work, but have to pay taxes wen we go up north

Sucks for you. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well i could just drive to the lowes in Newark, but i don’t lol. Tax isn’t very much…

Tax on that purchase works out to about $.78.

So for a total investment of $13.78 you get 3-4K plugs, and a lot of experience. Not a bad deal.

Next you can work on custom aquascape forms. Make some nice arches and caves for your animals.

Oh no…tax makes it a no deal!

Ya, that requires a lot of curing, and a long time. if i were to cure that rock i would put it in the creek in my back yard

Well its been forever now, the pieces have cured for a month, ad then i tested a few in the main tank… no algal growth… seems like it worked
