Hurricane preparations?

stocked up on food, water, and charcoal today. plenty to eat. and shockingly we werent the only ones.

got my back up. says 70 minutes at 40 watts. ::thinking:: guess its better then nothing. might run it for 10 minutes every hour.

this is going to be badd! just hope power isnt out for too long.

In 2003 Hurricane Isabel made landfall at about the same point in Hataras as Irene will. but it was only a cat 2. it moved inland far west of Delaware, and west of DC. still it left 50,000 delaware homes and business without power. or about a quarter of the Delaware population. the high winds were only 45-55 mph here.

Irene may pass much closer or even directly over us , moving slower, lasting longer with higher winds. Everything says Irene could certainly be worse than isabel. but it’s hard to tell. they are all different. so I’m taking it seriously.

Dang, just as my new plenum sandbed seems to have kicked in after 2 months and is cleaning out the algae in my frag tank. I hope it don’t get messed up again with no power. it’s looking good!

Great. Im in upstate ny and was gonna get back to de on sunday. I’ve got a friend taking care of my tank. Regardless I don’t have ANY backup devices. Where can I buy a battery powered airstone? (If I come back tomorrow)

Harbor Freight has a generator on sale right now for 82 bucks.

Home depot in Salisbury is open for 24hrs until Sunday and I just picked up a Husky 5000 watt Generator for $599. YahoO YahoO
PBJ! Feeling much better now if the power should go out.
Be safe everybody , be prepared for the worst and hope for the best. :BEER

You can get battery powered pump in the sporting goods section at Walmart. Fishing section of course.

One other negative about this storm is that we have had a lot of rain the past couple weeks so the gound is already saturated. With the added wind and the loose soil a lot more trees will fall and take out power lines.

Could not say that any better.

The traffic everywhere is starting to pick up pretty bad. So if you guys need plugs and wires hurry now before the supply runs out to hook your generators to you electrical box. home depot had a few 220v 30amp plugs to go in the generators yesterday but they were low stock. I went today to get a dummy plug for mine since the way my box is I will have to hard wire it in so it will always be live when we have power and there was a lot of people in electrical. They are also out of lawn batteries if you are relying on the electric start. BTW I am up north I do not know about stores in PA or sussex. Best bet might be the electrical stores like a graingers or something of those lines.

Testing my generator now its on and kicking PBJ! Halides are on and to tell ya the truth my tank looks nicer with just the halides and no t5’s

I just got the last 2 computer battery backups at the staples in dover. Hopefully one will be enough to run one pump in my tank but I got 2 just incase. If someone is in desparate need, I will sell one for the price I bought it for.

if anyone sees a 1000 - 3000 watt generator for under $500.00 in stock within 80 miles please let me know.
I know it’s a long shot but can’t hurt to ask for more eyes out there.

If you are at a store with one please call me 302-737-3922

Thanks

Frank

Someone needs to build a overflow that goes over a water wheel that is geared enough to operate the return.

picked up 2 battery powered bubbler for live wells, should be enough to provide oxygen exchange in my tanks. they are small 20 and 29

Go back and read Rosti’s post on page two of this thread.

Short of a generator I really think kens idel is best should be able to run a small powerhead close to the surface for quite some time.

well they’ll have to do…only time will tell how they will fare if and when the power goes out

The bubblers will do a fairly good job for a small not overloaded tank Yes almost all O2/CO2 exchange happens at the surface and a pump will move more water but the rissing bubbles will cause surface aggitation which will increase the exchange.

Whose house for the Hurricane party. I got the rum for the Hurricanes

I bought a marine starting/deep cycle battery at walmart today. 720 amps, 115 hours. hooked up to the 750 w inverter i got yesterday that should run most of the equipment on all my tanks. 2 quiet one 3000s at 43 watts each, a mag 7 at 50 watts. 3 maxijets as sump pumps for my fuges, 23 W each. a pair of T5s over the new frag tank, 110w, no HQIs, a pair of VHO on the 75 and the old frag tank, 440w. i could either run the VHO on oposite time schedules , or unscrew one of the bulbs. one VHO per tank will be fine. so 220w instead of 440w. and a couple air pumps for the 3 FW guppie tanks and an air pump for the koi tub outside, and a 39 watt t5 and a 32 w t8 over the guppies. Hey, ive still got a 100 watts to spare. i can run the 3 protein skimmers too. they use maxijets.

pretty good, i’ll just have to cut back on high power lighting. so the only question is how long the battery lasts until the voltage drops to the inverter low voltage cutoff at 10.5VDC. i think about 6 hours. then recharge with jumper cables from the car. at night with no lights, it should run longer. well, thats My plan , anyway.

A friend just wrote. hes been notified by the police to evacuate his Delaware city home on the canal saturday afternoon. its gonna flood at high tide and storm. not good. hes got a ton of FW tanks in the basement fish room that will flood… i will try to help him move some upstairs.

Oh, a couple other things. crank your fridge and freezer up to max. it will super cool everything in the freezer to like zero instead of just frozen at 27. and last longer in a power outage. plus make blocks of ice in tupper ware in all the extra space left in the freezer. that will help too for a long outage. if you use 2 liter soda bottles, dont filll to the top, only 90% full, then sqeeze the air out and cap. that allows for the ice expanding 9% when it freezes. then you not only have ice to keep your food cool, you got ice water to drink too as it melts.

A two-fer. Hmmm??? Do Pina Colodas Freeze?
