it happened to me as well. i had a canopy that had the openings on the back covered with eggcrate. the only way for a fish to get out would be to jump almost 10" through T5 retrofits at the perfect trajectory over the canopy top or out the back through the eggcrate. I found my wrasse behind my tank so im assuming he got some serious air or went through the eggcrate, most likely the latter, and he wasnt exactly a small wrasse.
i LOVE wrasses but the only reason i dont keep them anymore is because they jump. i think eggcrate will work but there is still a chance that he can get out. its also unsightly, adds inconvience to maintanence, and does block/reflect a lot of light. i think the best option for keeping jumping fish is a canopy with mesh covering any lateral openings, that way it wont be any hinderance to your lighting.
Yeah I forgot to mention the light blocking. I have to agree. Nothing like stressing over exactly how much lighting you have by spending weeks researching how to do it perfectly and spending hundreds of dollars and then spending $10 on a piece of egg create that blocks some of it and may not even keep the fish in.
Logan you said the best option is the mesh cover, I’d say the best option for jumpers is what I believe you or icy mentioned earlier, a well built canopy. When the canopy is tight on the top though with out a large openings you need to make sure you use more then one fan to pull air cooler drier air in and hot moist out to help with cooling.
I had a 6 line in my old 55 gallon 18 years ago and it was an open top and he never jumped out. He was in the tank with a niger trigger. If anyone should have jumped it was him. Never Did
I have some links on mesh top covers but the Depot and Lowes sell bird netting for ponds that are as narrow as egg crate and would work well. About $10 for a rather large piece. If the wrasse is small enough you could double it up
Getting ready to frag some greens and reds. For the greens 3-5 polyps will be $7 or $20 for 15-20. For reds the rice is $2 per polyp. Just let me know how many polyps you want and i’ll cut it up for you.
while we are on the subject of zoos i have a small cluster of about 25 too 30 brownskirted pinkish centers and they will not spread. just stay in the ball i bought them in. should i split the ball to get them spreading?
For mine i just put them in the tank and they’ll grow when they want. Are they on a plact to grow out on?
I bought two polyps of watermelons a couple months ago and it did nothing for a month or so. Last week i noticed three new polyps growing. On the other hand, my nuke greens i bought 3 polyps 2 weeks ago and i’m now up to 7-8 polyps.
had them for 3 or 4 months they are opening fine and lok great but not spreading out at all. my green centered ones spread out about 1 foot all over in same time frame
