Mangroves

i have a 6700k and a coralife colormax and my mangroves are HUGE. since last post, they have turned into a bonsai tree. i think 36watts t5No all together. the tips turned black, i knocked em off and they SHOT out of the tips. id say my smallest one has about a 12in stalk, not including the prop. it started with, and around 8 sets of leaves. mine are just floating around in the fuge, some got wedged between baffles. ill try to get pics for ya

I do still have them Jon, I am using a ‘fuge’ light over them. One of the energy efficient 6.5k bulbs. They seem to do so-so, they seem to shoot up until a certain point and then they just ‘hang out’. It may not be the best bulb to use, but then again they could be better mounted in the fuges as well.

I know this topic is old, anyone still having luck with mangroves? I figured I would try here before starting a new topic.

I’ve never tried them. but while those that are trying them respond, heres the trusty old

“Show Us Your Mangroves”

thread from RC just for fun and info. a lot of them are just starting. not much growth, but some have been growing for a longtime and look pretty good and useful for nutrient sucking.

i have 6 growing in my dt, lots of nice roots, about 1-2" long, but not a sign of leaves. 2 months so far. spray every day w or water.

      I've had them, tried 2 plants, one died with in a week the lived for 6 months or so then the leaves started to drop and died with in a week. ??? Figured I try them again with the new set up eventually.

Paul do you have an image of your light above the mangroves? They need a good bit of light. Consider what happens with your par meter when you take a reading right above the surface of the water… jumps significantly. Mangroves are in full tropical sun.

I agree they are in full tropical sun, but also read young/smaller mangroves are often shaded by larger trees, making the light less intense, they claim a common utility light is sufficient to grown them until they get quite large. I dont know how true this is, but does sound convincing.

Paul, could you take some photos when you get a chance, would love to see them.

makes sense ::thinking::

ok. the mangroves are NOT as directly under the ai’s as the pic makes it seem

and

a question: is it good to allow algae, and other stuff that might get caught to collect on the roots or should i keep them clear?

where’s my answers? where’s my experts?
