Can you take a picture of it in action? Show the output plumbing also. If the out put height is too high it causes back pressure in the same way as closing the gate valve. If its too high then the gate valve is ineffective.[/quote]
Wouldn’t it be the other way around? If the output pipe was too low (long) and was submerged wouldn’t it cause more back pressure?
when i did the mod on my old skimmer i tried to use an old gateway valve i had laying around that was too big. the extra height from the bushings wouldnt allow it to work correctly. i had to purschase the correct size GWV.
Ok, I don’t want to wait! With the single VHO I have hooked up now how well do you think an RBTA would fair? Its an actinic bulb, should I switch out to a 10k ish?
If you’re only using 1 VHO bulb I would think that 10K would be better then actinic. DPA sells T5s that are 75/25 bulbs - don’t know if they have them in VHOs though.
A lot of experienced members and BTA keepers have already weighed in on this. You should wait. Patience is one of the most important things to have in this hobby and sucess is going to be difficult without it.
You should care more about the life of the animals that you purchase than your own immediate gratification of having eye candy in your tank. We have all made mistakes and purchased animals that we werent prepared to keep, both knowingly and unknowingly, but to do something that contradicts 90% of the advice you have gotten doesnt make any sense IMO.

I couldn’t agree more. There’s a reason your mother taught you as a child to not stick that penny in the light socket.

I tried that and nothing happened. You can’t get the penny in far enough to make contact. Your mother was wrong!
He may be fine, a few people who have very good maintenance habits and well set up tanks have done it in as little as 3 months but the majority will not have that luck.

True. My face never did get stuck that way…and I never went blind either…
If you do choose to try it early, please be cognisant of your water parameteres, spot feed, and keep a close eye on it’s condition - 1st sign it seems to be stressed get it out of the tank.
I still wouldn’t reccomend it yet though. it’s just not safe for the nem, the other animals in the tank, or your wallet…not necessarily in that order.
Well I’ll be adding a 50 gallon sump that will act as a nice buffer for any changes in chem, which I’ll be adding more LR into as it cures in my curing tub. I’ll def keep an eye on the parameters. I can probably convince myself to wait until the hood & t5s are done but I’m sure I’ll be buying the nem shortly after.
