new 5.5 gallon AIO nano reef, new to forum also--

hey all, well it seems like ive started quite a little debate here. ill try adding some flake food and see what happens, check my levels afterwards, and then the next day and see if there is any change.

as for dieoff, the rock was taken out of the established display tank in the store, put into a bag with forced o2 and water from the tank, and then home and directly into my tank. it was never really out of water except for the maybe combined 20 seconds when it came out of their tank and went into mine. so i dont think there would be much die off, granted my params prob werent the exact same but…yea

depends on where u get the rock i got 75 pound or so from other reefers to start my 75 and was keepin sps with in a week ( still have that first sps) as for xenia ill give u a great frag for 10$
and when it comes time for me to add some corals il def hit you up for that frag. ohh man i cant wait till that time comes.

I’ll bring a few frags of some stupidly fast growing, ugly brown xenia to the next meeting. I’m going to be flushing the stuff pretty soon if I don’t give some away.

And yes, I meant biological filtration in that earlier post. Didn’t get much sleep last night! BoNg

Let me know if your going to a meeting i might have some stuff you can have for free/cheap… pink pom/pom xenia, some turquoise green button zoa some other stuff…

You LR in your tank now, if you were to take it out and put it directly into another tank, would you expect a cycle. No, cause your rock is cured. When it sits in big vats in lfs it cures, of course no shipped LR is cured, but if you pick it up locally (granted they are doing the right then and it has been there a while) it is cured. Ecspecially if he got it right out of there, Transported it home and put it right into his DT…

I agree with the mini cycle. There was a very large thread about this that i was in about 3 months ago, and we discussed it all. Basically you have bacteria, the colonize for what they are needed, and they keep spawning. When there isnt enough food some die off, but it is always growning. when you add more sources of food (ie fish, food, ect) there is more food thus more colonized bacteria can stay. If the rock you buy already has all of this colonized bacteria, and there is enough to keep up with whatever bioload might be in the water, then there will be no visible cycle. Your tank is in constant cycle, it never ends. the only time you can see it is when you have to much bioload for too little bacteria (i.e. start ups, adding numerous fish, ect). The thing is most of it is anaerobic, which is why it is under water and if you take it out of water it dies (correct me if i’m wrong with anaerobic i think thats the right word). Thats why cycle speeder uppers, and supporters are all bacteria based additives that with beef up you bacteria colonies in a hurry. Hope that helps at all… with that small volume i would say he is cycled…

well, since you insist ;D aerobic bacteria is actually the most common bacteria in our tank and is the kind you are referring to. It doesnt have anything to do with water vs air but rather oxygen. Aerobic bacteria need oxygen to do its thing where anaerobic needs a lack of oxygen to do its thing. Where you are likely to see anaerobic is in denitrators/DSB and other similar methods that intentionally keep oxygen free environments for these bacteria to colonize. There is a LOT more going on but, but its really been beat to death on this board and many others and is probably more than most people are interested in reading.

IMO, there are just a lot of ways to view/understand the nitrogen cycle and thats where a lot of the misconceptions come from. Im not a big fan of Reef 101 stuff typically, but i think this might actually make a pretty good topic at a future meeting that could be interesting for hobbyiest of all levels.

Ya, didnt know the difference between aerobic and anarobic… i guess its pretty straight forward lol…

I wont be able to make it to the meeting on nov 14th at Armco, but apparently there is one soon there after which i will try to make it to. but im def interested.

Cool! It will good to have you!

what was your build cost for the tank?

what was your build cost for the tank?
hmm ill break it down…well try to remember what stuff cost

tank-14$
Acrylic, silicone, new dremil bit-13$
Live Rock, Live Sand-40$ ish
lighting-soon to be about 60$ with addition of some LED lighting
pump-15$
Heater-10$
misc saltwater additives/test kits/mixes-25$ish

so all in all to bring me to where i am at this very moment im about 180$ in the hole, not too bad for such a fun hobby

when i started my 24 gallon aqua pod, i just did a 12 gallon water change from 90 and 12 new salt and used rock from 55 and 90. was up and running with no cycle at all. so i agree he will really not get much of a cycle but still should be paitent with this hobby. my :TWOCENTS

Ya, im not saying add all the fish you want now, let the tank mature for a few weeks

ime, everytank that i have setup after my first, i have had no cycle/undetectibale(sp) cycle . sps corals in from day one and looking just fine. first i started with a 20 which cycled. i transfered some LR from the 20 to a 12 gall AP and that was going strong from day one. Also had a 3 gallon pico up that never cycled. And to top it all of, I setup a 75 with live rock from all these systems, plus some i had sitting in a bucket for about 6-10 months. I didnt go crazy on the fish but they were all heavily stocked with coral.
i dont reccomend doing what i did. I set up the 75 out of neccesitty. I was supposed to have it set up in the apt for a few months before we moved in but plumbing and pump woes held me up. i was forced to set it up as quickly as i could and rush the livestock over since they were sitting in a neglected 20 gallon over at my parents.

o yea, going back to rca’s post about feather dusters surviving through the worst of it. I had a AP 12 drained 1/2 way for 6-10 months, with a few pieces of rock n water about 50 degrees. My buddy came to pick it up and it was full of copepods and bristeworms!

pico reefs(less tha 5 gallons) are AWSOME!! if you have shots of your back divider i would be really interested. I never made my own AIO but always wanted too. I have feared putting acrylic and glass together as acrylic expands and could bust the seals in your tank. I suck at cutting glass, so I always went with HOB filters. I had about 4 picos running at one time but the upkeep got crazy. They were awsome deco. I had one in ea bathroom, one in the kitchen, and one in the laundry room at my parents house. I filled there house with tanks  :D. MY QT tank was in there bedroom!

you can’t write a post like this and then not provide pics of all the tanks! :GOLD)

il dig up what i can

ok so i finally got some diatoms this past weekend, so im getting there. ive also got a good ammount of pods proliferating in the tank. looks like ill be picking up my cuc sometime this week. pics to come when i get em.
