new fish

Undies belong in one of two places. A species tank, or the ocean.[/quote]

I think that most triggers belong in the latter. The $&@# things will lunge at you if you get near the surface of the water… they are just MEAN.

oh yeah. the can be real nasty. my first fish ever, and still one of my favs, is the humu humu. he was actually pretty tame as far as triggers go, but i dont doubt that it might have changed as he matured. although triggers are my first love, they wont be represented to well in my new tank because ill have to stick with the nicer ones, which as you alluded to, is a VERY short list >LOL<

a crosshatch(likely a prior) is very high on my list and very likely. Other candidates inlcude the bluethroat and black hawaiin. I would even consider getting a humu humu or assassi depending on the rest of the stock list.

Have you done much research on the pink tailed trigger? I saw one at Atlantis aquarium in their 20,000g reef tank. It looks like a nice fish and it had to be “fairly” peaceful if it was in a reef tank.

Then again the size of the tank might have dampened the agression a little.

Yeah, the pinktail is another good option. I would put it in the same category with bluethroats. There really isnt a such thing as a peaceful trigger, some are just less mean than others.

As far as agressive fish in large systems go, i really dont think the aggression is dampened, i just think the impact is less notiecable than in smaller systems. I believe its similar to large angles. In a small system one could bring about devestation with its appetities. In a very large system, like the 20,000 the impact simply goes unnoticed.

You do bring up an interesting thought. Although i dont feel that agressive fish are less agressive in large systems, the reverse might not be true. I wonder if aggression can possibly be amplified in smaller systems?

yeah the undilated triggers are pretty nasty u cant really put them with anything else it seems at petkare we had luck once with an undilated and a red wolf eel but neither of them would i put it my tank… it just upsets me that it seems like my tank is turning out to be extremely aggressive everything seems to die in it or jump out for example my fireshrimp did fine for about 2 months than it decided to molt and i came back and found half of its body laying on the ground pretty depressing when u sepnd 35$ on it:(

Yeah It seems like whenever i buy fish they die. But when Ian buys them they live so I just dont buy fish anymore. I had 2 clown gobys. and 2 naso’s lol and my naked clown that got ate by a umbrella mushroom. poor things they were awesome fish. Dont feel bad tho Im sure it happens to all of us.

xwhat - maybe you should let Ian buy your fish for you lOl

I know i felt the same way many times. I actually just lost a fish during my system rebuild. Its always depressing. I think there are just some intangibles that are hard to quantify. Ive got fish that ive had for 4years that i think i couldnt kill if i tried, and some that havent lasted more than a couple of days. I believe that some fish simply never recover from the stress of capture/transport and just wont make it no matter what we try or how good our system is.

You are in a unique position as an LFS employee to monitor your fish for a lengthy amount of time before purchasing. IMO, its always a good idea to know how long the fish you want to purchase has been at the LFS. IF they cant tell you, dont buy it. Its also why its important to be loyal to your LFS and develop a good report. It will eliminate the need to buy impusively because you feel that someone may buy the fish. The can hold the fish for you to allow you to monitor the fish and make sure its the right fish for your system. There are a lot of perks of being loyal to your LFS. Sometimes the extra couple of bucks you can save by going online or out of state just arent worth it.

Back to the orginal topic, i was correct, DPA sells the damsel you described as red honey damsels although im not sure of the scientific name. Very beautiful fish, i completely understand why you bought it.

BTW, hit me up with a PM when you get a chance. I should finally have things together enough this week to have company over and your more than welcome to stop over later this week.
