BTW,
I don’t think you have Debasia, do a google image search for Bryopsis.
That might help Jon get you tuned in to a remedy.
Good Luck! :BEER

I thought at one point that I may have bryopsis as well. But this algae didnt have the same form as Bryopsis did. Most of the bryopsis photos I was seeing looked almost like a fern branch. This isn’t quite as organized looking as bryopsis, or at least the photos I was looking at online. I will keep looking though.

The Mexican turbo did not eat the stuff I had till it was pulled and thinned.[/quote]
I got a Mexican turbo, 4 astrea snails, and a ninja star snail today. As soon as I put the mexican turbo in, it started to go right to town eating on this stuff. He already almost has a 1/3 of one of the rocks cleaned up. If it looks like he can’t keep up with it, I may either start to thin it, or steal one of the mexican turbos from my little brothers tank, and use it until i get this stuff under control and my chaeto can take over cleaning up the nutrients…
Sweet. Glad the turbo is eating it.
Just a note, not majorly important, but the Ninja star was probably a good call as it is also Astraea. Astraea is actually a genus of snails and both the common Astraea we commonly see in the hobby and the “Ninja stars†are different species in the genus. I say probably though because for some reason I haven’t had luck keeping them for more then a couple of months. Might just be my qt tanks and my busy schedule(IE lack of water changes), but I also haven’t spoken with many other people who have kept them long term.
I was going to say even before reading you had someone to eat it I wouldn’t really worry about identifying it. If all you water parameters are in check and you have the right predators it really won’t matter much what it is. It doesn’t look like a horrible pest algae to me.(the type you hear stories about that over grow things in the best conditions and nothing will eat) Just something a couple of little adjustments will fix.
Thanks for the help. I will keep an eye on the turbo, hopefully he will eat it.
As for the ninja star snail, he doesn’t seem to be moving much right now, I drip acclimated and everything. Its actually kind of funny, it looks like he could easily get stuck in some of the live rock that I have picked up from Dr. Macs. I thought about putting him down on the sand, as opposed to up on one of those rocks. I will just have to keep a close eye on him.
I’ve had some of those ninjas last for a decent amount of time, but they usually seem to die off or be more sensitive than all of my other snails.
Here is a photo of my Mexican Turbo Snail on Day 1 of the rock with the most algae. If he takes to this rock like he took to the other one, in a few days, it should be clean. We will see.

+1 True Dat ^
Haha you can have my Mexiturbo for a little while, I’d be glad to send reinforcements. :BEER
One thing that I noticed with the Ninjas and one other person noticed as well. They tend to move more and night time. In the past mine would sit still all day and then the next morning be located somewhere else. Might not mean anything. Could be coincidental, but worth mentioning.
Well, you could try a bag of GFO and deprive it of phosphates?

It seems like since I have been hand pruning after the turbo was put in there, that he has been slowly eating the algae. I am not sure that just 1 will do it. IF this is some sort of Bryopsis, I may consider getting a lettuce nudibranch. Seems that everyone on other forums are saying that they are known for chowing down on Bryopsis.
I am not 100% convinced that is what this is, I haven’t found any real good pictures showing exactly what I have in my tank. Which does not mean anything, I’d just hate to get a nudibranch unless I was sure that it would eat this type of algae.
Hey if it is Bryopsis would you save some for me? I may try to grow it in a separate tank cause I wanted those lettuce nudibranchs for so long and could keep the buggers because I didn’t have what they ate.
yea, if that is what you want… seems kinda crazy. Wonder if nudibranchs would eat Nori?
Yea, they do seem more nocturnal, but just seem slower overall. Seems like their shell gets much larger than their actual size compared to other snails, might just be an optical illusion though.
ihuntinde, that looks like some algae i had in my tank when it was first getting up to speed. You can always rip it out now before it has any chance to spread, but it didn’t really spread to much in my tank, the HA does though…
I like to siphon out any algae this allows the siphon to suck the algae away immediately and not spread its spores throughout your tank. First try to siphon it out, if it pulls right out via the siphon then it is on its way out anyway, but if it sticks real well I like to hold the siphon tube in my hand while I pull out the algae, then like the siphon take it away. You can also cover the siphon while pulling the algae to avoid pulling out too much water. Works best todo while doing water changes!
They aren’t actually nudibranchs, they are sea slugs. Very similar though, Bellamy (icy) knows a good bit about them. No they won’t eat nori, at least the ones I kept, didn’t. I kept them for a while, then I started to raise my mag alk and ca levels up and I’m guessing the bryopsis I had died off and the they started to starve and wither away. They also liked to climb into my over flow and down into the sump, one stayed on a filter tray before the bio balls for about 2 weeks and lived!?!
I bet if you get your mag, ca and alk up and yank the stuff out every few days it should be on the way out and that turbo will pick up the rest of the slack.
