OT Comcast vs. Verizon Fios

Hmm… maybe I approached the limit and that is why I got the email? Or maybe its just because they know I run the game server. Ehh whatever… its not a big problem for me, as long as they don’t shut me down for using up to the 250 limit. I could see doing it if I went over, but that hasn’t happened yet. And I know that I don’t have to worry about copyright violations, what I use is all freeware that was devolved by the game manufacturer and publicly released. Plus no bittorrent going on, so there should be no problems. I guess they were just their way of letting me know I was approaching the limit.

Pretty much every XP, Vista, Mac, *nix server computer is a server, as it is running some sort of serving process.
Not always true. Those processes can be squashed.

I’ve read over some terms and I’m pretty sure hosting a game doesn’t fall into violation. An e-mail/web/ect. server on the other hand does. I can certainly see Comcast’s (or any ISP) position on this and would agree. The volume that I ‘serve’ is lower than most people consume uploading files to photobucket. I think a cap is the way to do it.
You need to brush up on your legaleze speak. The wording used in that first bullet (that I posted above) does indeed include game servers. Any kind, really. It’s a nice, broad, sweeping piece of legaleze. Not saying I agree with the policy, but it’s there.
It all depends on the interpretation…legal BS. On one side a PC hosting a game is in NO WAY a standalone piece of equipment or server, not to mention it is quite obviously for personal use. On the other it says including, but not limited to which pretty much opens it up to anything.

Regardless they shouldn’t be bitching about a game server, there’s much worse people can do.

Shawn, there is intercomputer client/server programs and that is exactly what they are, no I wouldn’t ‘consider’ it as a ‘server’, but it can still stand that it is.

+1 on sentiment

+10 on the correct usage of the word regardless …

You guys lost me back at log on. Shawn i bought a linksys WRT54GS2 wireless router, and a WUSB54GC 802.11g compact wireless G usb adapter because i didnt think comcast could get the wires together for the modem. my puter is on a stand alone island wall between the kitchen and living room which only had the phone jack for my old dial up. the only cable outlet in that area is on the corner outside wall. would have had to do some fishing down from the attic with some new lines. the house already had 4 room lines coming out of the garage splitter. so they put the modem in a spare room with a cable on one wall, and the phone jack adjacent, and hard wire back fed my house phone wires from there with the cable and modem. and plugged the wireless router in there too. seems to work good. i cant raise that screen al posted, but the internet gateway speed says 100mbps. the router/adapter talk at 54mbps and i got no ID what speed the puter USB ports work at. so is that ok? the guy did put in a better set of spliters and lined them up so that the one feeding the modem in the spare room got the better line strength. the living room tv and master bdrm tv seem to work fine too. modem is in a third room. puter is wireless.

is that the best i can do?

I didnt realize you were using the wirelss router as a means for your main computer to communicate.

Essentially Ken, here is the problem. Although your adapter is designed for througput speeds up to 54mbs, a usb 1.0 port will only allow around 12mb/s at best. In reality, probably far less. In your situation your going to need to crack the case and install a wireless NIC. Im pretty sure i can get you one for free, but ill have to check. Of course all this assumes that your USB is 1.1. To determine what type of USB ports you have right click on your my computer icon and click properties. Click on the hardware tab at top. Click on device manager. Explode the Universal Serial Bus Controller icon at the bottom of the list. The controller/controllers are typically listed at the top. The words enhanced or USB2 or both should be used to describe the controller. If not, then its a USB 1.1 and its going to can/will restrict your speed.

Cracking the case and adding a NIC card (wireless or not) is about a 2 min job. Its really easy… just shut off the computer, open the computer, put the card in the only slot it will fit, close the computer, and restart the computer. Thats about all there is to it.

Shawn - These speeds must be nice for him even if they arent Cable’s full potiental… he just moved up from dial up. I remember when I did… boy what a difference.

put the card in the only slot it will fit

so funny, but so true!!

its amazing how much things have changed. im only 30, but i remember when adding ANY piece of hardware was 10% skill and 90% luck. I can not even tell you how many hours of my life ive wasted on 3.X and 95 machines manually assigning IRQ’s, manually adjusting voltages, guessing jumper configurations, and just praying that even the machine would recoginze the hardware, let alone the OS. What i wouldnt have for my IBM PC jr!! Can anyone say X286? LOL

Heck, I can say Vic20. Still have one, in fact.

Ken this just means "click on the little “+” symbol. Put the dynamite back in the shed!!!

Oh come one - every now and again I STILL miss pulling all those little black tabs off the pins until I found a configuration that wasn’t already being used!!

www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

If i hang around yous guys long enough i just might lurn something about these machines. but i doubt it. im too dense on electronics. but i did find the USB controller and unfortunately all the descripts are STANDARD, PCI to USB.
Is that good? If i install that NIC card thingy, will it take a long drawn out session with tech support to get it in the secure software loop with the wireless router in the other room? I guess you mean the NIC card replaces the COMPACT USB ADAPTER i plugged and programed in.

so my puter IS the new weakest link in my network.

And yes the current speed is really great compared to my old 26400 bps dial up speed.

WOW!!

Hmmm … tech support for frag(s) … ?

lol

Haha, that tech support will even be more than willing to make house calls I bet :stuck_out_tongue:

I have frags~.!.!~?. I HAVE FRAGS!!!

Hey Shawn, what is Comcast down speed?

Ken, any other PCs in your house? (on your network)

Are you asking theoretically or specifically?

Theoretically, it could be as fast as the hardware(pcs, switches, routers, etc)could manage.

Specifically, it is dependent upon the account rates and the provisioned speed tier associated with that account. Right now, as far as i know, our fastest non-commerical tier is 50 mb/s. Keep in mind, getting an actual guage of true download speeds can be tricky using speedtests because of power boost.

And the lowest? I thought comcast is around 8 mb/s down. What tier do you have Ken? What does that speedtest show you? Just trying to figure out where Ken is at if he is around or below 12 mb/s then I’d hate to see him go through the hassle/$$ (not much hassle for us, but he’s a little umm tech challenged?) of putting in a NIC wifi, when hes not gonna see (or notice) the gain

So far, I’ve been happy with FiOS. Now, I’m concerned. They haven’t adjusted to DST yet. Now THAT’S gotta make you wonder …

wow what a thread! I didnt understand a lot (most) of it…but very interesting.

To get this conversation back on track, for the internet surfers and tv watchers of the world, haha…I have FIOS and cannot complain at all, I have never lost internet service at my house and have no complaints about the speed either. I will say this about the TV portion, I don’t see a ton of difference between the two pictures (I used to have comcast), but comast’s “on demand” or whatever they call it has more shows, movies, etc. Verizon seems to be adding things all the time but that was what I noticed after i switched to FIOS.
