we didnt get the valve because by that time there was water everywhere already.
we did adjust height of overflow and even the pump had adjustments. i guess a 5 gallon tank its hard to get right. but hell if she says upgrade you damn well sure ima upgrade!!!
I cant get nothing big still has to fit on that stand and im justs going with an AIO i think. JBJ Nanocube or Biocube maybe even an aquapod 12.
i just hope i have no problems returning the overflow and the pump, bc if i cant return them i cant get a new tank
If the tank overflows you need to move the overflow box down.
If the sump overflows you added too much water and need to remove some.
It will take time for it to equalize.
Sounds like your getting a new tank thou so no worries! I have no idea on whether or not they’ll take the stuff back, hope so, you’ve had it for what? 48 hours?
when the sand stirs, u may get a little. keep an eye on the trates and ammonia. shouldnt be much tho. 1 or 2 water changes should get ya through. im wondering why u couldnt entice one of the reefers up that way to swing by and get ya going??? shouldnt take but maybe 10 minutes.
my concern is that if you go from a 6 gallon tank to say a 30 gallon tank, thats the same as a hell of alot more than a 50% water change and all that new water will need time to mature, hence my recommendation to assume a cycle. if no cycle well kudos, but assume the worst and hope the best in reefkeeping
edit, also making sure your new water is at the tanks temp will keep from shocking any bacteria and keep any cycle at minimum
he can mix the water and let sit overnight… MOST of the bacteria isnt in the water column. i agree to be sure to get the new tank as close in params as possible to the old. besides, he was talking about going from 6 to a 12 or so… never saw a 30 mentioned. (y does everyone get so damn testy on here? i thought the point of these forums was to DISCUSS reefkeeping etc???)
I did get to return that stuff… Luckily i had enough and i got a Oceanic Biocube 8. Its an all in one, and has sorta a back sump so about 6 gallon of Dt. Which all works out great.
Yea the dimensions are pretty much the same. and i only have 1 fish in the tank other than inverts so im really hoping everything settles down quickly. though nothin gmuch in the tank but xenia zoa’s and LR.
I post back with pics, and readings of my tank so i can keep it down to a min. Got plenty of water in case i need a change, lol.
i gotta ask, why so small? in this hobby the smaller is the extreme in difficulty… its easier to manage a 200 gallon than a 5 gallon tank. i had a 26 and found it a headache and upgraded.

i know that seems to be the general rule of thumb, and ive heard all the reasons. however, in my case, my nano is about 1000 times easier than my display tank. the thing has been on auto-pilot since day one. i wouldnt recommend a nano as a first tank but other than that i think a nano is MUCH easier to maintain than a larger tank, especially the all in ones.
everyone has diff. experiences, so here are mine, i lost $300 worth of live stock to a 90degree spike, $80 dollars worth of clams to a salinity spike, 130 dollars worth of SPS due to a alk drop… over a 2 year peroid…
due to these reasons i’d talk anybody out of nanos, and also why i spent 3k on a total volume 120g system (75g DT 55g sump)
like i said, i wouldnt recommend them to a beginner, and for the most part, the problems you had with the possible exception of your temp spike are user errors and not problems inherent to nanos. and i know what people say, it takes only a small mistake to effect the chemistry in a small tank. while thats true, its also true that nano owners also make changes on a proportionately smaller scale that pretty much negate most consequences of that statement.
im not starting anything, i just think its bad policy to talk anyone out of anything, with possibly the exception of something generally stupid like putting a port jackson shark in a 20g tank, let alone something like the size of the tank a person should get.

well, i literally just finished plumbing my 3rd tank today which has well over 300g total volume and i expect it to be much more of a PIA than my nano and is one of the reasons why i would talk anyone into a nano ;D
to each his own… good luck on the new setup!!! be sure to post up progress pics. i really like the nano’s myself, even though the smallest tank in my house is 65 gal.
i should say i wouildnt suggest, not talk someone out of it.
and it is user error to a degree and my problem was evaporation, i went to the beach for 3 days at a time a few times and my ATO (aka friend with a key to my place and instructions) didnt kick on when it should have.
wow alot of statements , lol. well i may seem like a true newb, and with some stuff i am , such as sumps and ato’s and thats mainly because my first tanks ive always read simple is better, so the less stuff i did to mess with the tank the less problems i had. ive been reefkeeping since 2006 which int a whole lot of time but i have enough expierience with the corals i love and set ups i love. With these tanks i have now i just wanted to do new stuff, new corals, new setups etc…
as for the nano’s, i was introduced into the hobby as a nano owner. I know no other way but the little guys. Let me say if you keep up with your water changes and do not overstock aka 1 clown goby in a 8 gallon, ( some ppl i know actually put percs and cardinal fish n damsels in them) then you wont have big flucs. On my 8 even my old 6 i had 36 watts on it, evap happened once a week to where you could notice it and then it was time for a water change anyway.
All in One tanks are so convenient to us nano owners, put a mini fuge in chamber one, chemi pure and purigen chamber 2 and even a mechanical filter or skimmer in chamber 3. On the 6 i just took down my temp didnt move more than a .1 in a day.
Im not trying to say either way a nano i better or worse but its definitly a huge trend in reef keeping at the moment and we are getting new tech all the time to help maintain our tanks better.
and doing a 5 gallon change (24AP) or a 2 gallon change (8BC) is easy as hell. I dont dread it at all. And i keep softies in my 8 xenia etc… and have small critters like sexy shrimp and pom pom crabs that i see all the time.
So to each their own indeed weather you have a 120 setup with awesome wrassess and other awesome fish i cant get or a nano with a yasha haze goby and sexy shrimp we all will encounter the same problems and enjoy our success with hard work.
I will post pic today!! the cycle if i had one last nght didnt register in my test kit!! So its all good so far, shrimp and fish are still kicking
And to everyone i truly appreciate the one on one help that you guys give me
