The Fish Bowl Frag Fest

are there downside to running it 24/7… i have it in my filters and a bag of chemipure…

i run it in my 180 24/7… but, i change it like a religion on the 1st of every month. i think thats the main issue, after a month or so, the carbon has been said to release toxins back into the tank. dunno if its true or not, but not worth risking to me!

I have heard the same thing that it can release things back into the tank. Carbon can make a significant difference in how clean your water is. I believe there is a debate that it can sometimes make the water too clean and certain microfauna don’t do as well in a system kept 100% clean all the time… That being said every single tank I work on at my day job has carbon in it all the time. I also keep carbon in my main frag system most of the time. The only time there isn’t carbon in the system is when I am too lazy to change it and if I am too lazy to change it I still remove the old stuff if it has been in there for a decent amount of time.

As I said there are things in the hobby that aren’t debated. I have personally never seen an issue with running carbon all of the time.(but just as fishguy said you must remove it frequently as it doesn’t take long to clog up with stuff and not too much later it can start to release everything it captured slowly back into the tank)

okay doakay, i change filters every 2 weeks, and then do the chemipure ever 3-4…

Is it bad to do a 15% water change every weekend… cause i feel like doing a lot of waterchanges now that i have infinite water…

As long as your new salt water matches your tank water closely, weekly water changes are a great way to maintain excellent water quality. There are many successful hobbyist that use this system.

Well keep in mind your parents are ging to disagree with the “infinite water” philosophy. It’s nice to be able to make it at home and have extra on hand after just a few hours, but for every gallon of RO water you make you piur 4 gallons down the drain.

That and filters and membranes get expensive to replace too.

But with that being said. I try to do at least 1 10% water change a week. Lately it’s been 2 or 3.

i do 10% per month and have great water quality, my bioload isn’t exactly high so far but i may bump it to 15% a month.

We have a well so the water is “free”. My father told me not to dump it in the septic so i lug a brute container around… and ya exp, but when i do a 10% on all systems and it only takes 10g i think im ok lol…

purify?[/quote]

you said you have a well so its free, my question is do you run a RO/DI filtration system on that water or do you assume its clean (its not)

o hell no its not clean lol, read 170 after house filters something liek 900- undefinable before lol… ya i run 6 stage, sed, 2 carbon, ro, 2 di… comes out 1 after ro and 0 after DI

so the tds makes u feel good. so glad to have seen these numbers!. bring it to the 19th meeting. are you going to the eca frag swap on the 17th? eca’s a nice store! should be fun.

yep, ill get it to you on the 19th, i might be going to the store on the 17th o wait … no i wont i will be visiting wilson college with my girlfriend. college she wants to go to, its all girl, so ill be stuck (depending on how you look at it) with 300 females and parents in a meeting about how this college is the best… joy… lol

ahh you had me confused for a minute lol

lol ya, The RO system makes life soooooo easy…

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks to all the nice people at The Fish Bowl for being so good to host the demo. This was my first time visiting the store, it was easy to find just off the freeway. I must say i thought the store was very nice. packed a nice selection in a small space.

I couldn’t resist the good deal on ORA Saddle Back Clown fish, so I bought a pair of them. They are in my fuge for the 75 right now getting acclimated. They are looking good and eating well and seem to pair up and play nicely. I’ll let them bond a while and fatten up before i put them in the 75 with some bigger fish. that way they will work together and not let other fish bother them. They will be a nice addition to the tank.
thanks again. I enjoyed the visit.
