What to do now...

Hello and a big welcome to the club great to have ya here

:Welcome)

I have Vermitid Snails and would LOVE to get rid of them, anyone have any luck with something eating them? I have read you can super glue them shut, but I have A LOT. Not only are they not nice to look at or touch, I’m pretty sure they are upsetting my zoa.
The Vermitid Snails doesn’t harm the animals or the tank at all, but if you don’t like it just for looks; then yes, you can use super glue to glue the trap shut or what I used to do is just pick it out with my fingernails or something rigid and throw it in the trash. Make sure you get all of it especially the base, otherwise it will make more tube and grow more.

Thanks so much every one! BigCase I keep thinking that I would like a female too but I have a feeling that keeping this one alive will be enough of a challenge. Hope you get some!

Guess i will get to work on chipping the vermitid snails off.

Any one able to tell me what this is? I have scooped quite a few pieces of it out of the tank over the last month. It’s hard like a shell or something.

Oh and as for the original purpose of this post, just got home and my perc is much happier than before, guess it was the tomatoes for sure.

To me it looks more like a cluster of small feather dusters that you usually find those in the sump or overflow area and usually in the high flow area.

Check those that are still in the tank and see if it looks like feather coming out of the tube.

The Feather dusters I have all have white tubes, the stuff in the picture is clear with darker spots on it.

I believe they are a type of imobile snail vermetid or a snail closely related to them. There are ones taht are that size and there are ones taht are slightly larger. They will send out thread like slime to capture plankton and then bring it in to eat. You can notice this easily if you feed your corals plankton with the flow shutoff. I hate them and break them off when i see them as their projections can irritate corals and slow their growth.

I definitely have vermitid snails but the other “shells” are all in coraline so I didnt realize that they are basically clear otherwise.

This is my struggling zoas, the slime from the vermitid goes all over them, I assume thats what is wrong with them because they were fine before. Also, I would like to get rid of all the coraline on the rock, how do I do that without further harming the zoas? Actually I would like to get rid of most of the coraline in the tank, I feel there is too much.

Here are more pictures from my tank, sorry they are phone pictures for now. Last night was busy for me and just grabbed these really quickly. I had hopped that the goby (I think thats what it is) would come out and maybe someone could ID it for me because I have looked at pics of gobies and blennies and cant find one that matches it. It is the one that I assume was a hitchhiker in the decoration when I got the anemones because I never asked for it.

The white anemone

Found this on my phone, this is the perc I lost the other night and my rabbit fish

Ruby Red hanging out in the tank

Blenny, affectionately referred to as The Ugly Guy

Not sure if these guys are vermitid snails or spaghetti worms. They come out of holes but not tubes.

Just one of the many vermitid covered rocks

Surprise “goby” I know its not a great pic but its the only one I have for now, I will keep trying to get a new one.

Nice pics! That slime looks like diatoms to me. Does it go away at night and come back during the day? Can you blow it off easily?

Im not sure what slime you are referring to but I did have a diatom bloom because of the move, it has gotten much better and my snails are really cleaning it up.

In a 55 to keep him feed and happy you will need to get him eating prepared foods, I would also see if you could get a blackworm or micro worm culture going and live BBS
Thanks for the info, I have tried mysis and brine, he shows no interest in either, any other suggestions on prepared food? Also what does BBS mean? I will look into the mico worm culture.

BNelson…No, it does not blow off, I guess I should touch it to see if its hard or soft, I always just assumed it was coraline.

The whole tank about two weeks ago, it’s got a long way to go, I can’t wait to see how it turns out!

1st - :Welcome)

Great thread. I love seeing everyone come together to help out.

I feel you on the vermatids. I spend a decent ammount of time with my rocks and some wire cutters clipping the majority of them off the rock. That one rock looks pretty infested with them, I’d replace it, but I think it has your zoas on it?

I typically dont see the “slime net” of my vermatids unless I’m cleaning the glass, and stir up alot of the substrate. I’d imagine that it might actually be beneficial, potentially dragging food items accross the zoas or any other coral, as the snail “reels in its net”.

Great score on that Ruby Red…that is a VERY nice looking fish. I’ve never seen one like that before.

B, if you’re still taging along. Purple Slime, on the sand. It does go away at night and come back during the day. Diatom or Cyano? Go!

See, even I’m learning from this thread.

Again welcome, and keep up the questions. Were here to help!

Baby Brine shrimp.

The dragonet will be a challenge to maintain long term unless you can get it onto frozen foods. They eat hundreds of pods/day and all the extra feeding they require can put a strain on your filter. What type of filter do you run? How often do you do water changes? What type of corals do you intend to add?

cyano is what I meant… good catch Rob.

Thanks Faralon! On the vermitid slime, every time I feed the tank, it’s out. While there is some on the rock with the zoas, the majority of them are on other rocks, maybe I will just replace like you suggested. Now do I replace with live rock or base?

BNelson, I will see what I can do to get BBS in there as well. Im not sure what cayno is but what is on the rock with the zoas is there all the time, day or night and it does not clear up and come back.

I do weekly water changes, typically 10-15 gallons. You’re going to yell at me but Im running a whisper filter. Im not really set on the corals I want just yet. The zoa was my first try at them and I have had it for about 2 and a half years. It started out as a small colony and got pretty big but it’s just not happy now and I want to fix it.

Ahhh yes, Cyano. I’ve had great luck with Chemiclean. And by great, I mean I used it once, it worked great, 48hrs as advertised, and didn’t kill anything. Just follow the instructions and be ready for a 20% water change. (aka, plan to treat the tank two days before you’re ready for a WC and its barely even a headache) Fairly affordable projuct if I remember correctly also.

Tank looks great by the way.

If replacing the rock, I’d do one or two pieces at a time. Give it a week, swap in some more. I’d use dry rock personally since you’re already up and running with your beneficial bacteria, they’ll seed the dry rock fairly quick, and dry rock is much more affordable.
