I must of been typing that when you were post the pictures, i didnt see they were zoa. They should be fine
Here are a few more shots of my tank as of today. I just started putting corals in it over the last week, so it is barren at this point. I think the next purchase is going to be fish, but I don’t know which just yet.
My fish plan is:
3x Green Chromis
2x Banghai Cardinals
1x Kole Tang
1x Basslet of some sort (TBD)
I need to clean out the QT and get it running before I can do that though.
I’m off today and it’s raining, so that means… new tank pics! I need to get a white balance card to use, but these didn’t come out too bad.
-
Alien acne (left), green implosion (center), ring of fire (right)
-
Sunny D’s (left and finally starting to grow), devil’s armor (center), to-be-ID’d freebie (right)
-
Wider shot of the above and my ticked off gatorades that were just walked across
-
Pandoras (kinda plain, but under the right light they are may favorites right now)
-
Purple hornets (left), Joker (center, the colony is higher up), Rastas (right) I just picked the hornets and rastas up from Aquarium World yesterday.
-
Gatorades (really like the stripes starting to come in on the right polyp) Starting to reopen after a hermit walked over them
-
FTS from above. There are two other frags I didn’t include. One is candy apple pink, but it isn’t opening fully right now. The other I haven’t been able to ID yet.
Nice pics!
Not that I’m a member of the tang police or anything, but 50g cube is kind of small for a tang. You can get away with it in a stock 55g bc their 4’ long which gives them more swimming room. Just my :TWOCENTS
I tend to agree. Kole tangs aren’t really active swimmers and they tend not to get very large. That’s probably the last fish I’ll add, so it will be a while before I get it and I might change my mind
Looks good let’s see more pics
I just started dosing Spectracide Stump Remover yesterday to get my nitrates up. I added 5mL (mixed at 1tbsp/cup of RODI) to the tank and that got me up to 2ppm NO3. I’m going to test again in a couple of hours and see where it got to overnight. After seeing positive results in other tanks I decided to give it a try. I haven’t been able to get my nitrates over 0ppm since my cycle finished. My skimmer is off and I only do monthly water changes.
Here are two before pics:
I will post monthly (if I remember) updates.
After 24 hours my nitrate dropped back down to around 1ppm. I dosed an additional 5mL and it brought me back to about 2-3ppm. I’m going to test again in about an hour and see how I did last night. The theory is you need to average the uptake over several days to get a feel for how much you need to dose daily.
Still sitting at 2ppm. I’m gonna skip the dose today.
Ooooooooooh mannnnnnn… ASR got in Vanderbilt chromis for me! WOO HOO! I’m getting my QT setup now. My first new fish in years.
Mike wanted to hold onto those chromis for me since they weren’t eating well. Two weeks later and none of them made it He’s going to try a new source and order them for me again. Major bummer. Time to take the QT down…
That sucks Adam! At least he held them for you knowing that they werent doing good! That says a lot about a LFS. Most places would of just sold them to you. I hope he finds a better source for you!
Agreed! He didn’t ask me for a penny for the fish either. He’s got my business without question.
I really like the color on my Kessil A360, but I feel like it could use some more pop. Kessil does have some power down in this range, but not as much as I would like it to. Here is Kessil’s representation of the output of the A360WE. Y0u can see there isn’t much in the low end around 400nm.
I decided to go the DIY route and make a small add-on for my Kessil that is unobtrusive and blends as much as possible into the existing look. I think what I’ve come up with is a good start in that direction. I’m still tweaking it, but here’s what I have so far.
Equipment:
LEDGroupbuy 3UP Hypverviolt (430nm) LED ($9)
LEDGroupbuy 3UP XT-E 40 Degree Lens ($1.50)
Meanwell LDD-500HW LED Driver ($7.50)
12VDC Switching Power Adapter ($5)
Aluminum Flat Bar ($6)
Total Cost: $23
Wiring:
Wiring up the device is very simple. The 12V power supply hooks up to the input of the Meanwell driver , the output of the Meanwell driver hooks up to the LED board. The driver is controllable and I planned to wire this up using the Kessil’s daisychain output but it turns out this driver takes a PWM input, not a 0-10VDC analog one. Not sure how I missed that. I found a driver that will work, but it’s $18 and I don’t really feel like paying that for a simple driver.
Mounting:
I made a very simple mount for the LED using some aluminum bar from Home Depot. I bent it in a vise and painted it with spray paint. This mounts to the same mounting screw on the center of my Kessil and it brings it down to the same height as the bottom of it. The little heatsink is probably not needed, but I found them cheap on amazon, so I tossed one on there anyway.
There is a definite difference in the pop of the corals with this on. This LED comes on before the kessil does and the corals all start to open when it comes on. I don’t know how much par this adds by itself, but it seems to be in the right range for them in that 430nm dead spot.
In a first for me, I made a short video update of my tank. I just passed the 6 month mark on the tank and thought it would be neat to put a short video together showing where the tank is today. This was shot and edited on my iPhone, so don’t expect Oscar quality material. Hope you enjoy!
I stopped by Aquarium World on the way home from Philly yesterday. Glad I did! I snagged a WWC Twizzlers and Darth maul frag. Dirt cheap!
Attachment to follow. Apparently the site is fine with jpg but not jpeg files, like the iPhone saves them as.

Very nice frags… As to be expected from anything that comes from WWC… If you ever go to Florida that is a must go to coral shop.
