Another ? from the rookie.........carbon in sump

I have also noticed from other tank builds they use phosban reactors or something else. Is this traditional?

I also was reading about carbon in the sump/fuge. Is this a good idea.

Man i am addicted to this s/w thing.

I run 2 reactors one with carbon and one with phosguard ;D seems to do ok

I have a ton of them, all came in on live rock.

You can use a reactor but it is not necessary. Besides it would require to branch off the return pump or add another. You could just use a media bag in a med/high flow area. It has to do with contact time; the more time in contact with the carbon the better.

I nrun carbon in the sump, but I use a large carbon pad, something you would normally see in the top of a wet/dry. I slip it in between the baffles of the sump (after the fuge) and it seems to work well there.

In cases where something has gone terribly wrong and I need a large amount of carbon, I use a media back and drop it in the retun side of the sump.

Ive got to agree with tattoo…i think your best bet is the reactor. Its going to be the most efficient way to utilize the carbon and its going to be cheaper long term than the pads. A lot of people just throw carbon into a 2littlefishies phos reactor. Pretty cheap. If you want something a little nicer you can by a 26" PM substrate reactor for about $75. Thats what i use and i love them.

mmmm good info. I have to take a look at it.
