Aquarium cleaning magnet

Magnets leach and rust, you should never leave them in the tank… ever…

If you are too lazy to remove a magnet, you shouldn’t be in the hobby…

I dont often use magnet scrapers. by the time i get around to it, the coraline and crud on the glass is too thick for the magnets to touch. so i use a SS cookie spatula from the dollar store to scrape it off. I sharpen it like a knife with a stone. works great.

While I agree magnets shouldn’t be left in the tank (though I am guilty most of the time) a properly sealed magnet will not leach or rust as the magnet never comes in contact with water.

How can you tell your magnet is still sealed? It still floats. A leaking casing will allow the magnet casing to fill with water and will cause it to sink instead of float.

I’ve had the same mag float in my tank for 10 years! only took it out once or twice maybe… Not Lazy, just convenient!

+1

i leave the thing in there.

actually, ive got one that has been in the corner of the 75 for a while. i think the coraline has grown over it and glued it to the glass.

Looks like Tim and I take it out every time. The reason I asked is I used to leave magnet inside and always hated it’s performance. When magnet was new it cleaned very well, then after 6 month its performance deteriorated. I soaked it in vinegar, replaced pads and every week after cleaning take it out and rinse. I absolutely LOVE to use it now and its like new every time. I now look forward to clean glass because it works so well now.

That’s great to hear, Rosti, that you enjoy cleaning glass so much. You Can come by and clean my tanks anytime you like! I’ll even provide the beer!!!

ok, lol

The mag floats work great and I've usually kept them in the tank. With the new tank there not staying in the water, I feel with them sealed there not anyway to leach the iron however with them staying in mine have grown Coraline algae on them and it does scratch the tank glass. The new tank has a starfire front and I DON"T want that one scratched.

I have a magfloat but it doesn’t do too well against tougher algae. I keep it in the tank and haven’t had any problems
