Aquascaping how tall

how close to the surface do you have your aquascape.
I tried to redo mine yesterday an it was not so great, more then a few rock slides one crushing my new Helix Acan.

I took it all out and clean the sandbed real good but it all took longer than I wanted it to over 4 hours.

I tried aquastix putty but that was a failure I will try again next week.

Things I will do different, this time I tried to put all my corals in Tupperware tubs, next time I will just use rubbermaid tubs with some egg crate heater and small powerhead.

This time I tried Aquastix putty and free stacking, next time I will drill and use acrylic rods

last time I started @ 5:00pm next time I will start before noon

But back to the Topic how tall are you guys stacking your rock ?
being mostly SPS with only a couple LPS and zoas, I would think my best formation would be a couple pillars with a top shelf but how close to the surface ?

I would say as tall as YOU want. I have some rock work that is 4-5 inches under water, but not everyone likes that. IMHO it’s my tank, and if you don’t like the aquascape that is your problem not mine.

Frank think I'd agree with Pat, it's all how it looks to you , it's your tank as long as it is secure and it looks good in your eyes thats what matters.

I have the left side of mine thats 10 inches below the water about and the other side almost goes to the surface.

you could get real creative and make a pile right to the surface in the corner. then plant a mangrove pod on top of it with a narrow beam LED spot light over it. in tank fuge and two zone bio tope. their roots will wrap the top rock, just below ther surface, in time and it will stand on its own.

My new tank will be SPS dominated tank. My goal is to have them grow as wide and tall as they can so, my rocks stay at half or little bit above half for that purpose. If you do decide to go pillars route, you can use the orange fiber glass rod that they sell at Low’s or HD for $2 each. That’s what I use in my tank.

I like Ken’s idea if I have room in or above the tank.

I did it this way, but then omitted most of the front pillars and stacked the left over so I had 2 levels of places for coral to grow.

pretty much looks like this now, except the GSP is taking over and the whole top left side is GBTA’s now.
