The good thing is that I have a shut off valve right above it and that will be closed except when I pump new SW into display tank.
yes , the major problems with check valves in a reef system is any particle of dirt or sand or some kinda tube worm or crustatean growing on the flapper seat. it props it open and thus a slow leak. in your case, its mostly in clean, new saltwater. so you should have less chance of a problem. but, the isolation valve, for when its not in use, is the proper solution. always backup a check valve with a gate or globe valve.
Looks really slick John. Will you be using a float with hydrolic shutoff on the ro?
Thanks Scottman. Yes I will. In the top pic you can see the white line from the float installed in the top container. Already have my R/O DI unit hooked up to the auto top offs on my display tank and frag tank, just have to tee in the AWC system.
Old school site glass is where it’s at. I was going to do that on my gas tank for my motorcycle build, but opted against it.

Here’s a way to improve the reliability of that float valve.
that’s a good idea

I know right! Why didn’t I think of that before, it greatly improves reliability! :BB)
Finished the electrical work today YahoO and filled the upper container with 40 gals of water from the garden hose. Of course there is a small drip all the way on the bottom of the lower container.
Drained the water from the upper to lower container worked great, and then by turning some valves, started the mixing pump. So far, so good. ::
Going to the OC boat show tomorrow so I will do the R/O water hook up on Sunday. :BEER
Sounds great John, glad to hear. Keep us posted.
Nice!
Thanks Sneeyatch
Finished running the R/O water feed line to the top container. Everything is done, but going to wait a couple more days when the temp down here gets into the 50’s to start filling the top container with R/O water and do my first auto water change.
Is the area this is located in climate controlled? Do you have or plan to put a heater in the container(s)?
Excited to see this setup making things easier on you!
The setup is in my garage, it gets pretty cold in there and yes there is a heater in the bottom mixing container.
The reason I said I will wait to make new R/O water is that my R/O unit makes water faster when it warmer outside.
Awesome john, can’t wait to check this thing out next month. ::
Thanks Casey. Looking forward to seeing everyone
Well tonight I am mixing the new saltwater in the bottom container and will be doing my first auto water change in the morning. So far everything is working out ok, :: find out how the drain from the display tank into the upper container will work in AM.
Heating up the cold RO water took all day.
Started my first AWC yesterday and only to find out that my intended gravity feed setup from the main display tank into the top container didn’t work. :BB) It seems that the stand with the containers is too high and I couldn’t get flow via gravity. ??? So, I did some plumbing modifications to use the pump to drain water from the main display tank as well as to pump the new SW back into it.
This setup worked just fine and now WC’s are hassle free :BEER
Oh yeah, I also removed the inline check valve because all the pipes have shut off valves installed on them.
Way to go John. Good use of the pump. Love ease of water change.
Thanks A
I just updated the pic to how it is actually plumbed.
