I lost my powder brown. It’s Mia no clue where it went. I noticed something coming out of the anemone and watched it thinking it was the powder brown, well it was my abalone I already saved it once. This time I didn’t notice it. I really liked the abalone too it was a great worker n wont bulldoze. Now I need another may get two. It grew and was huge. I will just feed the anemone once a week instead of every two so it’s not so aggressive.
So, you think the anemone ate the powder brown too? the powder brown wasn’t doing too good wasn’t he?
anemones aren’t “aggressive” or “passive” - they are opportunistic feeders who will eat continually as long as food is hitting their tentacles.
Now some anemones are “safer” than others due to the level of their sting and their “sticky factor” - condylactis anemones have a fairly strong sting but aren’t super sticky, bubble tip anemones rarely have a strong sting and aren’t very sticky, carpet anemones have a strong sting and are extremely sticky.
I’m not sure what type of anemone you have but if you’re losing fish to it than you might want to consider evicting the anemone or upgrading to a larger tank ;D to give the fish more room to swim and not have to get too close to the nem.
Generally speaking though most of the anemones we keep will not be able of catching an otherwise healthy fish (except maybe the carpet) so if the PBT was already weakened and not doing well it might explain where it went.
That sux Tim…sorry to hear :-("
are you going to get another tang? what kinds do you have?
it is a hadonni carpet, it is very sticky and it does get less sticky if i feed it more. It caught the abalone before but i got it out in time, this time i didn’t notice it. I does suck i liked it and my daughter said awwww lets get another one lol. The carpet has eaten a few gobies before. I do need a bigger tank hope to have one around the new year. The carpet stays its almost 7 years old. The powder brown is up and down. It was looking better but wasn’t great. I have a yellow mimic tang/chocolate tang, a hippo, and a flame angel. They were all friends I would like another but i think i will wait. I know i will have issues adding another. I did with the brown at first but after a day they all hung out together.
Dam Tim that sucks sorry
Tim, does that big carpet host any clowns? I was wondering if they would keep stray fish out, by protecting their turf?
yeah two maroons that lay eggs all the time. they chase fish but not a lot they are very mild mannered
I thought the Maroons are really agressive? The gold stripe maroons? seems they would be very protective. unless, they were teasing the tang into the nem for a good feeding.? they do like to feed their nems.
Im not sure it ate the tang. But it’s a female white stripe and gold male. They are really nice fish not shredding at all. I can put my hand on the anemone while they have eggs and they just watch me
hmmm… You are lucky. if i put my hand near my spawning pair of Ocelaris clowns, they bite the snot out of me hand!
That is why I will never own another carpet anemone ever again, they eat everything! Sorry about your loss. I’d rehome the carpet first then get another abalone.
The carpet is my favorite part of the tank. It stays
I’d setup a dedicated tank for the carpet and clowns then, maybe an aquapod? It will continue to eat fish/anything else it gets ahold of.
That’s a good idea. But I don’t want to do it I lost 3 firefish possibly a mandarin and now the abalone in 7 years I can live with that. It is nature, it’s not like I’m killing them. I don’t know if abalones and nems live together or not but I’m sure in the wild they come in contact with one another at some point.
