Bad week

I’ll preface this with NOTHING FLOODED

I have always been a big proponent of making sure you really LOOK at your tank everyday. never be too busy to take 5 minutes to check everything out and make sure everything looks ok. Sometimes it’s best to take your own advice.

I’ve been very busy the last couple weeks with work, kids, gym, wife, etc. So i really haven’t spent much time downstairs where the aquarium is. And thus have not been closely monitoring/enjoying the life in the tank. Well I lost my powder blue tang, which apparently was just large enough to foul the whole tank and cause a considerable nutrient spike. I can say this is what happened with almost exact certainty because it then caused my prized RBTA (the original but not the clone) to melt which then fouled the water further causing me to lose all 4 of my cleaner shrimp (and I’m willing to bet my lobster but havent seen him but 3 times in 2 years anyway).

Well several wate changes later and everything seems to be getting back on track. I make up a new batch of top-off water with Kalk and put it up on the shelf, run the line to the sump so that when the powder settles I can start the kalk drip (usually wait until the next day anyway). Would have been perfect if I had remembered to close the drip-valve - so instead of dripping the clear liquid we shoot for I dripped a considerable amount of milky white kalk water in to my tank for a solid day. what makes it even worse is that where the hose dripped in to the sump the liquid got immediately pulled through the return pump and pumped in to the DT - covering EVERYTHING in the tank in a pretty white coating.

2 days of all powerheads and Wave2K on and tank clears up and is looking good again. No additional losses or casualties.

So then we have company over Saturday night for a few drinks - they bring their 6 yr old along. No worries, he’s a good kid, gets along well with mine etc. etc. kids are all downstairs watching TV and playing…suddenly their kid comes up crying, no shirt on, arm is bright red, and he’s still dripping on the floor. Apparently my darling 4 yr. old dared him to put his arm in the tank at which time the tomato clown took a nip at him - which should have tipped the little einstein off that maybe he should get his arm out of my fishtank!! WRONG!!! He decides to play just long enough to give the condi anemone a chance to sting the crap out of his fore arm.

Ok - The kid is fine - tank is fine - animals are fine. Let this be a reminder when your friends come over with their kids to remind EVERYONE of the rules.

BUT - you should have seen the sting on this kids arm. Apparently he has VERY VERY sensitive skin - you could actually see each individual tenticle mark!!! Was really cool to look at - wish I had taken a picture.

Craig, first of sorry to hear the mess you’ve had! That totally sucks I hope everything works out for the best. Any corals lost?

Secondly I think you’ve got it wrong. I have found the cause of all your problems. You have obviously been doing things very UNCraig like. I’ve quoted the part where you describe the problem and bolded and underlined the exact word that was what caused all of your issues…

I've been very busy the last couple weeks with work, kids, gym, wife, etc. So i really haven't spent much time downstairs where the aquarium is.

I agree with Ian. This Gym thing is bad for you, your tank and your friends little kids arm. I think its time you see the error in your ways and sit in front of that tank and drink yourself silly.
Man what I wouldn’t give to see that kids face when that anemone grabbed him. I remember my wife’s when I had her hand feed mine the first and only time. I didn’t tell her what was about to happen so she was only half paying attention. I almost peed myself. She did not feed the tank again.

Ouch… sounds like a rough week Craig. Its to bad you didnt get a picture of the kid’s arm… that would have been sweet though. I always laugh when people are like, “Aww look at the little nemo, they are so nice”. They always get this shocked expression when I tell them that the little #*&@% draws blood if I’m not paying attention and get to close to his anemone.

Hey, look at the bright side… at least you didnt need another basment remodel.

When they get a little older they get a little more grumpy to being bothered or invading their space - sort of like a teenager

Can and will are 2 different things. Our little 2" Osc. clown will nip my arm and can break the skin if he really tries. Our 4" maroon will almost let me pet her… never shows agression other than feeding time. And then there was a maroon clown at UNE that would pull off bite sized pieces any time you reached in her tank.

Wow sounds like a rough week, hope it gets back to normal.

Well!!.. That’s another fine mess you have gotten into … Stanley!!

You will just have to clean up the mess…

We both lost a powder blue (must not be there week), sorry for your loss.
