Baltimore Aquarium

We took a trip to Baltimore over this past weekend and visited the Aquarium. Really cool place. I got some pics of divers feeding in one of the larger tanks. We checked out their reef tank. To be honest, I really wasn’t that impressed with the corals in the reef tank, I noticed some dead colonies of corals, but I did like the aqua scaping and the fish in the tank.
Here are some pics.

Sweet, I wanna take a trip down there as I haven’t been in a few years…worth it? Better than Camden?

I have never gone to Camden, but Baltimore is definetly worth the ride. It is right in the Inner Harbor, that has tall ships and plenty of resturants right on the water. And a Hard Rock Cafe there too. :BEER YahoO

That’s an interesting observation. I’ve been to a few public aquariums in my travels, and, typically, I come away less than impressed with the reef displays, as well.

Better than Camden?[/quote]

That’s a difficult question to answer, since the answer will invariably be subjective. Each aquarium has it’s own personality, just like each brew-pub has it’s own unique set of brews. :BEER

I definately like Camden over Baltimore in terms of hands-on/educational displays. Baltimore has better seahorse displays and, I think, a better “big tank”. Camden does have the walk-thru tunnel, but I still like big tank in Baltimore more.

Of course, all this is subjective, so YMMV. :TWOCENTS

You really need to make it up to Atlantis sometime… its worth the trip just to see that reef tank. 20,000 gallons is hard to imagine untill you see it in person.

i visited the national aquarium a few months ago and was extremely disappointed with their reef tanks… good diversity in terms of species of their displays but honestly the majority of people have no idea what coral even looks like i herd women complimenting the pretty fake plastic corals which they thought were real lOl

I like the walk around spiral big tank display in Baltimore.

lets be honest… the majority of the visitors to any aquarium like this is looking to see fish. lots of big, bright, colorful, or weird fish. not too many of them even know what coral is… so as an owner/ business manager of something like that, more fish will bring more business. and we all know, more fish will make it harder to keep the water good for corals…
am i making any sense here?

I have seen the aquarium at Atlantis, being that we lived on Long Island before we moved here. The reef tank is truly amazing.I had the good fortune of having a behind the scenes tour of the reef tank, unbelieveable. The size of the protein skimmer is huge. And, they have a very large variety of corals in the tank. Really is something to see. I could stand in front of it for hours.

dumb beacuse they dont keep corals as a hobby, therefore dont spend a lot of time studying them?? wow…

nah! cause they voice opinions and spread information that’s false, like piranahs in salt water, or let’s buy a snakehead, or whales are fish, or war is good, or the earth is 6000 years old, especially to kids

LOL that is funny, that is one thing I can’t stand and really have to try to keep my mouth shut is when you hear some parent telling their kids something, that is so incorrect, but the parent thinks it is so correct… Makes you want to turn around and smack 'em!

yep, ian, it’s just horrible how much sht kids believe b/c adults misinformed them.

that’s one area i have to give it to the national aquarium for its perfect for education…the displays are well written with a focus on conservation
