Black acrylic

Hey guys,

Any of you know where to find black acrylic local? Working a DIY overflow box but i have no luck. If not is there any way to may clear acrylic black safely for fish?

Thanks everyone in advance.

Casey

I looked around, and called a bunch of places a few years ago with no luck. I’ve used the krylon fusion plastic type spray paint before, its supposed to be safe but i’m not really sure… i do know snails will chew it off easily on a tank facing surface, dont think i’d ever use it again in a tank :TWOCENTS. you could always “frost” the glass with sandpaper, but nothings better then black imo… it sure aint cheap though #@$^

Here are 2 of the website that I looked at before. They seems pretty reasonable.

I wonder if black vinyl would be easier / cheaper?

Superglue it on to a clear acrylic overflow. It’s reef safe, comes in a variety of colors, and is available locally from your neighborhood sign shop.

How about window tint?

Craig I like your thinking. Will let you all know what I come up with

they have acrylic in colors.

Case, sorry to resurrect this thread… i’m making an overflow box, did you find what you were looking for?

If you didn’t, what thickness were you looking for? I’m making a bean-animal style overflow… do you think 3/16" is thick enough or do I need to go to 1/4"+?

I think 3/16" should work, I can calculate the actual deflection at the midpoint (max deflection) if you need that info. Worst case scenario, you will have to put in a small brace the middle. It should be well hidden though. Acrylic is expensive and I’d rather just put the braces in IMO.

the difference between 3/16" and 1/4" by my measurements (that i estimated because i just thought about it today) is about $10, but could be more… i’m not doing C2C although it would be sweet.

I don’t think less than 3/16" will be good because it seems like the thinner it is, the harder it will be to bond together.

Putting in braces is a good idea, i didn’t think about it. I’ll send you actual measurements when i get home bnelson.
