black blotches on clowns

So my 2 clowns have developed these blotches and spots overnightish. They range from pinpoint size to 1/8 size… its only on the mated pair.

From what i have read there are 2 options:

Stinging by something

Black Ich (unlikely)

I also read somewhere that it could be caused by a rapid change in feeding, and i went from 3 times a day to 2 ties to 1 time to 1 time every other day in a week.

Also the Urchin might be stinging them, and i dont have any corals that they can host which would sting them…

So what are you guys thoughts, i know a lot of people on here raise clowns so maybe they might have some input.

Picture is worth a thousand words.(tip it may be hard to get the clown to sit still enough for an image, but try using the flash it may help. If you can’t get a still image take a video clip and take still images out of that. If you are not sure how to look into using the PrtScn button on the keyboard and pasting it into paint.)

I doubt the Urchin is stinging them.

What type of foods are you feeding them.

Are the spots flat like they are painted on, do they appear three dimensional like they are growing off of it or do they look like divits?

After you attempt to get images it wouldn’t hurt to double check your chemistry including your temp and salinity.

I am not sure what to tell you at this point. Hope they are alright.

They seem fine, and i barely noticed… i have noticed sence i have gotten them that their entire body has gotten a little darker… ill try to get some images

tested already everything is good ph a little high… but ya… and they are flat spots

working on pics ill have them tomorrow, and the black on their stripes looks like it is bleeding?

as in the colors are bleeding, like pouring water on a picture

mine had them for awhile, but went away pretty quick. They started with none, then i put some zoas in and they showed up then went away. Put an anemone in they hosted, spots showed back up and disappeared. Second anemone same thing.

Have you seen them fooling around with any corals at all?

Well, clowns adapt to and asimilate the toxins in their host anemones and other corals. It might take a little while for tank raised clowns to develope immunity to their first anemone. But it’s in their genes to do so. that might explain the black spots developing with each new coral host and new toxins.

On the other hand, it could be your pirate crew of fish in the tank are voting them out of the tank with the symbolic “Black Spot”

Just ask Billy Bones or Long John Sill-veeerrrrr…

ARGH!

I’ve seen this topic come up on dozens of forums. 99% of the time it’s zoanthids stinging your clowns. The clowns never quite adjust to zoa’s as hosts but it doesn’t stop them from trying. If you remove the zoa’s, the clowns will heal. But it’s not necessary, they’ll do just fine… only they’ll have spots.

Okay thanks, thats what i thought. I thought they were being stung. i see them bump into the urchin all the time though, and they dont host the anemone i have… i think its too small.
