You should stop by sometime… I think I have 8-10 different types of Corallimorpharians (The family that Mushrooms, Hairy Mushrooms, and Ricordea belong to) and most get trimmed from time to time.

hows the mushroom doing for u icy. the 2 mushrooms i have from u arnt so hot. i put them both in the frag and there looking better. i should mention the recordi detached prob because of flow or something. in a few days it will probably go back into the main tank.

The one that we got from you is doing good, he has grown a little and moved but no problems. What is wrong with the other shrooms? Yeah, the Yumas dont like high flow, and they only really like medium light, but if they get a spot when they are happy they will take off quite nicely.

i would like around 2-3 of each possibly  wanta do a few different types of mushrooms in the 25^.^ and ill probably still have some in my 90 reef that im still in the process of setting up… only have to use some pvc cement on the pipes and ill be good to go! woohoo! going to put damsels in first to get teh cycle going than going to add clowns and such afterwords!

i would stay away from damsels. trust me they are very mean and teratorial animals. and like most of us you will eventually pay hell getting them out later

i beleive craig had some in his tank and it took him a couple months to catch them. i dont like damsels in the least. there big nasty and usually ugly. for less then 20$ they sell a bottle of bacteria. how big did u want um. i need to frag the rhcp shroom so that will take a while but should be done by the meeting

+1 …

Chromi’s work well and are not nearly as tempermental. They seem to pair their own down to a size they’re comfortable with, but they leave everything else alone. Cheap too.

I would reccomend avoiding damsles for 2 main reasons:

First, damsels get to be mean, nasty territorial little SOBs. Nothing sucks worse then adding a nice $100 show fish and watching it get the snot kicked out of it by your $4 “cycle fish”. they’re smart, coniving and a PIA to get out. I tried unsiccessfully for months to trap and remove3 of them before I got fed up and tore the entire tank down to remove them.

Secondly, and even more important, cycling a tank with fish in it is mean. Think about the first phas eof a cycle…Ammonia spike…ammonia is detrimental to fish because it burns their gills and prevents them from being able to breathe. Part of the reason people cycled with fish is that fish poo provides food for bacteria, but more importantly…dead fish provide food for bacteria.

I liken it to pouring liquid amonia in to a 5 gallon bucket, put your face in to the bucket with a towel over your head and take a few deep breaths…now imagine not being able to pick your head up out of the bucket. Please DO NOT do this, it is for illustrative purposes only!!!

Please consider this before tossing a handful of fish in the tank on day 1 to speed up your cycle. You will have just as much luck and a much more stable tank if you use LR and a raw shrimp to cycle your tank.

well the reason im putting the damels in first is because im not concerned if they die… im hoping they will they are already the most agressive fish in my tank and my poor psuedochromis that i put in hid for about a week until it finally got tired of the damels and started attacking them back… now they dont mess with him mostly just with each other. i know they tend to get big and aggressive but i listened to PetKare when starting up my tank and they said to used damsels to start it up they said the blue green chromis arent as hardy as the damels and also the blue green chromis cost so much more at petkare than damsels. as for the mushrooms ill take them as big as you are willing to give me

If your tank is still going through a cycle, why are you throwing fish in there to see if it will survive? That is a cruel way to cycle your water. Like said above, if you want to speed up the cycling process, throw in a peeled, raw shrimp to help it along. If you don’t want the fish anymore, take it to the LFS and trade it in. But if you decide to keep it, wait until the tank is completely cycled before you put any fish in there (want or unwanded).
My :TWOCENTS

what if i have like frozen brine shrimp do u think it would be good to throw those in instead of regular shrimp?

"because im not concerned if they die… " I really don’t like that sort of attitude. I have to agree with what has already been posted about leaving damsles out of the tank unless they are in the overall plan and cycling your tank in other manners. Also if you are worried about a dollar price difference of damsels vs chromis you may want to reconsider jumping into this hobby. Try not to read my comments or others comments as mean yelling, but other members of the club who are trying to help you out and get moving in the right direction.

I often tell people they can start the cycle in there tank or push there tank into a cycle by over feeding frozen food. It will work by the same concept. Table shrimp or even Krill are a little easier as once they are 50% decade and have already spiked the tank they are easy to remove. They are also a lot large and more likely to cause an ammonia spike then brine shrimp would.(you’ll have to use a lot of brine to make it happen)

Check out the link below for a good read on cycling a tank. There is a lot of misinformation and crappy politics on this forum, but if you stick to reading the 9 pages of this article by New Reefer it is a well written article. Near the end it gets into some detail about cycling.

I understand the mindset of using fish to cycle a tank. it wasn’ that long ago that this was the “normal” way to do it and it’s hw every LFS and person in the hobby advised to do it. But it is important to continue to do your research and progress along with the hobby.

Hoping something dies is drectly contrary to what we are attempting to do in this hobby - which is to educated, preserve, and allow for the rebuilding of the world’s reefs and reef creatures.

If you no longer want the damsels, please take them back to your LFS, whether it be Pet Kare, DPA, Just Fish, or Green Banks. Someone will want them and will give them a good home.

Please understand no one is attacking you (not intentionally anyway) we understand you’re new, we just want to make sure oyu have the best available knowledge with which to make your decisions. And since you work at a LFS we want to make sure you are educated enough to give the best possible advice to customers in your store.
