Brackish Fish Integrated into Saltwater

this thread is related to starrynights nano tank and her bumble bee goby…

a while ago i left a comment that i didnt think she could keep the goby in strictly saltwater because the bumble bee gobies are listed as being fresh to brackish water…

after a little reading, i see some people are saying that any brackish water fish can be successfully integrated into a saltwater system…most of them said by gradually raising the brackish waters salinity till it reaches that of the tank…

From what i read, they were saying that this is why mollies are able to adapt to S/W systems…

does anyone have any knowledge/experience with this?

i had bumble bee gobies as a kid before i had saltwater, and i would love to put a couple in my tank

Our experience is the little guy seemed to be doing good for about 2 weeks then disappeared for about a month and a week and just showed back up, looking/acting exactly like he had been. Will keep you posted on his progress.

I’ve kept mollies for a while, but never long term. Just to kick some algae issues, then back to the store.

My limited experience in this area: I had mollies for a year or so that reproduced in my system.(was like an automatic feeder) I haven’t played with any other brackish because many of them are not safe with inverts or are fin nippers.

I have successfully kept both mollies and green spot puffers for at least 2 years (well the puffer anyway mollies were counted in months).

The key is to slowly bring the salinity up. I have taken a green spot puffer in straight fresh water and over the course of about 4-6 hours of SLOWLY drip acclimating to full SW. I imagine the longer you take to acclimate to salt water the better but I have found 4-6 hours to be plenty. It’s important to remember to use a heater in the bucket you’re acclimating in to prevent the fish from stressing as the water cools down.

My dad did this a couple years ago. He addeda couple mollies for extra food, but after a while they grew and we didn’t like them that much anymore. We didn’t gradually increase salinity over time. We just threw them in there and they were fine.

Haha sounds like Joe’s acclimation process!!

I think that is how we’ve acclimated almost everything.
