brain coral

so a month ago i picked up some green brain from premium. i need a small piece to glue to a rock. heres the Q: how do i frag a brain.

What king of brain coral? People use the name for a few different corals.

Personally I used a hammer and a chissle. A wet tile saw or a dremel with a diamond bit would work better though. I would wait until the coral has been in you’re tanks bare of miniumum 2 months before fragging. Best to wait until it has grown to at least 1.5 times it size, so you are sure it is healthy.

Jon

it was a lime greenish one. i ended up taking a pair of tin snips to the bottom. i tryed not to harm the polyp stuff on top. i will see if i was sucessful tommrow.

i as well have a open brain coral. it is about 10 months old. the diameter is around7 too8 inches and would like to know if it is fraggable. was told you can not frag them. i also will add that i feed mine large minnows and large whole shrimps about once a week and he seems to be growing at a rate which i fel is good but only doubled in size in 10 months. so advise as well would be great.

Hey Glenn, any chance of a picture of that. I was reading the Book of Coral Prop. and he mentioned that it is actually easy to frag Trachyphyllia genus brains and they do quite well. He recommends using a water cooled saw. If it is not a Trachyphyllia and you can throw up a picture so that we can get an ID I’ll see what it says about it.

mine is an open brain. not fragable. picture below

It looks like a Trachyphilla to me… they are supposed to be good fraggig canidates. If you look on google images for it see what you think. The only open brains that are not very fraggable are cynaria, scolymia, and symphyllia.

what happens to a pink spotted goby when a brain is hungry? answer below. just bought him saterday.

and the answer is…

That’s awesome but weird that it caught a live fish. That being said they do perch a lot.

WOW! I don’t know that I have ever seen a brain eat a fish before.

I know fish oil is supposed to be good for memory but this is taking things to an extreme lOl

Seriously though, that is cool, sorry about the lost fish, but at least you got a great pic to show your friends.

They will eat a lot of things but I would have thought that fish was too big. You may need to feed him more. Maybe you could try cheaper foods vs. a whole fish. Heck my last dinner out didn’t cost $25

ha ha… that sucks. just last night i had my mandarin that i have had for a week deside to go carpet surfing. found him when i looked at the back of the tank. thought i heard something. to my suprise it was the goby. i figured the wrasse would jump first. tank looks good though.

fish seemed fine saterday and sunday morning, must have been in destress and ended up dinner. ya i do feed my brain atleast 1 large shrimp a week sometimes 2. my bubble coral as well. i am starting to think our tank critters eat better than we do! i know for a fact that my tank sees more seafood than i do. well atleast i am done buying gobys for awhile i draw the line at 4. so guess i will do some thinking and research for my next fish.
