I aquired some stomatella snails from Dave when he closed down his tank about aa year ago. Not many, about 20 that I could see. Everthing I have read says Stomatella snails release the sprerm and eggs into the water which causes the water to turn a bit cloudy. 2 months ago I had 2 stomatella snails move high up on the glass and stay there for 2 days. They stayed there day and night which is odd for these snails. On the 3rd day the snails were gone but on the glass about 3 inches away was a trail of snail eggs. Everyone said it was a coincidence. about 2 weeks later I had some friends over and we were up late, the tank lights were off, when my friend exclaims that there are hundreds of little specks moving up the glass. They were tiny and they appear to be stomatella snails. I let them grow for another month and I can definately say the are stomatella snails. Weird reproduction or coincidence they definitely bred in the tank. I started with about 250 that I could see and now there are 100 or so that pop out here and there.
From what ive seen, that is how most snails/sea slugs reproduce. I bred lettuce sea slugs for a while and they spawned the same way, and I have seen our stomotellas lay eggs in our tank since it was set up.
ok i had to reply and tell my story. I brought home a fairly big conch shell from lewes, ya i know!! ya i know!! i had it for over 1 year and only 1. one day it was completely out of its shell and its trunk or snout was about 4 inchs long. it was not moving around at all. thought it was dieng. but when tuoched it would retract fast. i left it alone for 1 more day and all it was doing was placing trunk in sand. so i did not want it to die in tank so i removed it from tank. about 1 months later when lights were off i had about 30 baby conch shells all over glass and now few weeks later i have larger ones moving around. so time will tell how big they will get.
that’s cool…do they die after they lay eggs?
my nassarius vibex reproduce in much the same way. I bought about 25 off of ebay over a year ago. I couldnt even guess how many i have now…upwards of 300? there are so many that i constantly am
finding them in my sump, overflow, fuge, etc.,
they breed so fast and so often that my crabs can not even begin to keep their population under control. ive been plucking them out and giving them away for months now.
i find it amazing to watch my tank after lights hhave been off for awhile. the amount of life you see. i always see new bugs or snails. and not sure if conch snails can reproduce by there self but mine did. i also had a burgandy sea serpent give birth and i only have one of them as well. weird i tell ya.
i will take some snails that reproduce ;D
Found this vid on RC it uses a CSD in a logoon tank with DIY rock. Jon this may be a good idea for your lagoon tank
Also on RC
300 gallon CSD with 4" pipe, the return in the display is split to two 4" fittings as it was too strong coming out of one 4" fitting.
Below is inside the beast, the 4" T goes into a 2" pipe (originally I had it at 1.5" but that wasn’t enough to get a complete siphon break. The 2" pipe goes down and is several inches shorter then the 4" pipe, and the bottom of the 2" pipe steps up to a 3" coupling to provide greater surface area to help break the siphon. The 1.5" pipe on the left side of the pic is the fill line.
Fill time is currently set at about 7.5 minutes and it dumps about 300 gallons in about 30 seconds

I think if I use the vent tube idea from the first post and the 2 drain tube of various size I should get the best of both worlds. I also think I have only 2 10-gallon surge tanks that also double as a refuges.
Al that is very similar to what I was planning on doing, just one slight modification.
There is a lot we can learn from big public aquariums as far as neat tricks to show off the animals and save on power and so on. Seems like half the pictures in many books made for the hobby come from public aquariums.
You can’t end a sentence with “just one slight modification” Thats not right. You have to post more info
that is absolutely amazing. For most of us it just wouldnt be possible. but for those of us with larger in wall tanks it would seem pretty straight forward to implement.
I am defintiely bookmarking this for for future use. I will seriously consider building one when i get my big tank going again…hopefully i wont let a little thing like a divorce get in the way this time ;D
Yep I have a snail trail again
I went to feed the fish a little snack and found some more snail trails. The only snails that I have seen in the sump are the stomatella.
PMing you now.
Yeah, I have watched my stomatella spawn too by injecting up into the water current. they must use some chemical communication to say when. then the female gets up on a high rock upstream in the current and sprays a cloud, then when it passes over the dad downstream, up high on his rock, he sprays too. then they disapear back down to the sand.
Logans-daddy, if you think of it , next time we might meet, would you bring a hand full of those extra vibex snails for me.? We could trade or something. I’ll bring a frag. I would like to start a population in some fuges.
thanks in advance.
What do baby snail look like? Where do they get tiny shells? Do they grow their own???
They look like tiny specks for a while. Actually for about a month you can’t tell what they are. They grow there shells themselves.
Today there are more snail trails. Not 1, not 2 but 3 seperate trails. 2 are in the main tank and one is in the sump. I am tempted to remove some from the glass and put then in a hospital tank to verify what type are breeding. One apears to be an astrea snail trail (see pic)
Top of the main tank
Bottom of the main tank
Bottom corner of the sump
THose are some, ummmm, happy snails!!!
Al you have absolutely got the horniest snails I’ve ever seen.
