Bumps on Naso Tang's belly.

She’s had these weird three bumps under her right pectoral fin for almost a whole day now. We’ve even slowed down the feeding schedule, so I don’t think it’s a full belly. She eats great and shows no signs of disease or injury. Any thoughts??

Looks like a full belly to me, it probably got a hold of some extra macro algae to eat. Most likely it will drop a big “bomb” on your tank later ::hitsthefan::

Yeah, I agree, looks like it ate a big amount of food. Good idea to hold up on the feeding. Try feeding your fish every other day.

Yeah, we switched over to every other day feeding. Only thing is there is no bumps on the other side, and I have seen it way fatter than that.

I’ve got nothing. I think the prev opinions are right and it’s just a ful belly, at least a partially full belly. what do you feed?

Red and green nori mostly, 5-star reef bar frozen, emerald entree frozen, and the acans get krill and sometimes silversides.

When was the last time you fed silversides?

do you mak sure the frozen food is thouroughly thawed before feeding?

Krill and silversides always thawed, but the Naso has been known to eat out of our hand off of the frozen cube… is this a bad habit that should be stopped?
The Naso doesn’t really go for the silversides, I’d say we fed them silversides about five to six days ago. We feed them to the acans, the whisker coral (duncan), and the sebae anemone. The purple tang will steal just about anything from the corals shortly after the catch, but the Naso doesn’t seem to like the krill or silversides, just the purple tang.

Most fish we keep in this hobby are grazers, not binge eaters, so feeding every other day is not really good for them. The best policy is LMO (less more often), 3 times a day is best but some of us cant be home that much so twice is what I do. Just cut down the amount to a sprinkle here and there.

There is no harm in getting a fish to eat out of your hand. I personally find it a great parlor trick to show the kids friends when they come over.

I personally only feed every few days (or so) and have done so for years, my fish are all very fat and happy…of course that could explain why they get so excited to see me when I show up in front of the tank.

Never before heard that feeding your fish every other day is not good for them,Tim. So I guess when I go away for a few days and they get nothing to eat fron me, is just being totally wrong.
I always thought they could be able to find something in the tank to hold them over. I would like to hear other peoples’ thoughts about this topic.

Short version, they should get about 5% of their body weight per day.

Long version, and a fantastic read.

Our’s has constant red and green nori available (a 3"x3" sheet 3X daily at the most, stuff’s expensive), when they go through one sheet we set up another. We just do the frozen/pellet feed every other day, so technically they are able to graze constantly. I agree with the everyday feeding at least just a bit, we only switched to control nitrates. Not that I think that we’ll be going back to nori and frozen everyday ever, the system we have now works great for the grazers and the inbetweeners.
And we should have zero nitrates by tomorrow PBJ! YahoO GolfC BoNg

You know that you don’t have to feed them that expensive nori stuff. If you have asian store near by you can use what is sold at the store to feed them. Just don’t buy the seasoned ones, plain ones. It also comes red, green or brown type.

Is a big secrets that your doing to get rid of nitrates that we don’t know about? share with us.

Altered feeding schedule, got rid of our nitrate trap of live rock in the sump (just a few small rocks there now), got a GALLON of chaeto algae from John, and keeping up with water changes. Also changing out the filter sock much more often (three to four times a week).

The three little bumps turned into two larger bumps within the first day, and then turned into one big bump. Josh seems to think that he saw the fish eat a rubber band, and yesterday I found those little squishy airy Styrofoam pellets floating in the corner of the tank (we had gotten a coral delivery and they must have flaked off of the box). I’m hoping that he passes whatever it is that he may have ate, if that is the case at hand. Will wait and see.
