I’m trying to help a friend pick out a reliable Calcium reactor and would like to price them out for myself as well. I have just about no hands on experience, but understand how they work, the different parts involved, and how to set them up. Just looking for some pointers in picking out a well made reactor. DIYS is not an option I wish to pursue with this.(I am sure on that)
What brands do you guys have experience with or recommend?
I have a reeftek that I got second hand. It works great , quality unit and has a Eheim pump. Why not DIY ???
+1 on DIY. Really the only way to go with a Ca Reactor considering the prices. I built an almost exact copy of a Geo for a friend for around $50.
However, to answer your question, Geo!
Don’t get me wrong I respect DIYSers out there, but for this it just won’t work. I can’t wait for the parts, don’t have time to do the research, and need something professional now, so I can get it broken in and functioning asap.
For this project I’d prefer something professional looking which requires little tinkering, easy maintenance, clear champers, and 0 leaks. Maybe after I’ve bought one for myself and worked with it for a while and understand what I would want to personalize or improve then I’ll try one, but for now I need something that is well made and works.
One vote for Geo another for Reeftek. Other opinions?
I’d get the Aqua-C RX-1
Interesting, Tim. Had been leaning towards a two chamber unit, this one has an odd “giant media chamber”. Looks like a well made unit though and I love their skimmers. Why is it you like that one?
I have a few online reef friends from another site that swear by it.
AquaC is a great brand.
It has a small foot print.
when i finally need one, this is the one i am buying.
the only con I’ve ever heard is that the quick connect fittings “seem” cheap, but to me they look like the ones on my air water and ice 5 stage RO/DI and i don’t mind them… but also don’t run them 24/7 so keep that in mind to what it may matter.
are there no other opinions on this?
sorry for the late reply, just got back from the Bahamas and I snorkled every day. I saw a load od coral and a ton of sea turtles. I think I am going to sell the tank and buy a sail boat and move down there. I am using and have been using a GEO ca reactor. You can google them. These reactors are very relaiable and I would recomend them strongly.
Thanks Mike. I remembered after I e-mailed you that Rich had said you were going away again and then I remembered it was about a year since you had been before. Hope all is well with you and the tank. If you seriously consider breaking down PLEASE let me know. lol Will shoot you a longer e-mail or give you a call later.
