chemistry and numbers

4th month w/ ca reactor and no controller
78*
ph 8.11 hanna meter
1.0255 calibrated refracto
ca 470 api with 13 clams 140 gal system 3 more going in next week
trites, amm 0 api
trates a slight reading, very slight api
phos 0 hanna checker
dkh 8 api
effluent dkh 11 api
7 bpm
12 ml/min
noticed a slowdown in the effluent, so i opened it up a bit after the test, that should help raise dkh a bit
i messed up the mag test kit TWICE and gave up. the alzheimer’s strikes again!
dosing nothing, phosguard/ROX 8 carbon in tlf reactors 24/7
10 gal w/c yesterday
feeding a little most days varying between elos pellets, frozen and freezedried mysis and a little 5 star

::thumbsup::
and…
Bring some water to the meeting Paul, i’ll give the Mg a testing for you.

wow, john, i’ll take you up on that offer. thanks. what kinda test kit? isn’t there anything that doesn’t need a million operations for mag? this seachem i’m using is just one thing after another. i’ll bring some. last two tests of mg were around 1275.

Its a salifert kit, I don’t know “how accurate” but its always consistent for me. When i had a red sea kit, i could test 3x and get 3 diff readings.
maybe some others might want to bring Mg kits… we could all test one sample and see what everyone gets

i’ll bring elos if i remember

YOU BETTER please do, i was hoping somebody would. I’d like to see one, and they get good accuracy reviews.

btw… Paul, do you ever supplement Mg, or does your reactor and w/c schedule keep it good?

no supplements. ive never had any poor mag reading, meaning lower than 1250. but it’s only been tested about 10 times over the years.

I was hoping you said that… i rarely have to add it to my tank, and when i do its not off that much, never really has been.

oh btw john i measured 1250 with the elos you measured 1260 so pretty close

and Paul got close to that also, 3 diff brands and we’re all within 10 - 20… not bad, i’m pretty confident with my Mg test now for sure.

Yeah I had the salifert and liked it. I think they were out so I got Elos and it’s ok

Any one ever try the hach products?

I’ve never hear of them ???

Me either. Hagen? Hach sounds German made

Of course no one knows about it. It’s not hobbiest grade test kits. Looks like lab or industrial kit.

Yea, its the stuff I use in the lab at work, i just need to order some different reagents than what i normally use. You guys are pretty serious in the hobby, why not have serious test kits? they are not that expensive and the results can be verified with lab grade standards so you will know you have an accurate read.

With that said, does it use same simple methods as hobbiest kits or do you have to be a scientist to use it? you know add this, mix this and that, add five more chemicals.

It really depends on the test, most are titration tests. I.E. add 5 drops sample turns blue then titrate to a pink and record the reading. Im trying to figure out the test for magnesium now looks like I would have to run it thru the spectrophotometer for best results as most titrate tests are for low range. Could use a titration test if sample is dilluted with di and multiply the reading accordingly but then there would be some loss in accuracy.

They seem expensive, unless they’re freebies from work :think)
