Chiller suggestions????

I am relatively new to the reef scene and have just experienced two days of higher than normal temps. I didn’t lose anything yet, but my Xanthia and Zoos are looking a little tired. I have a 20 gal. tall and am looking for suggestions. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you sure you need a chiller? Have you tried blowing fans across the waters surface? You could also have you lights come on later in the day when it isn’t so hot.

I don’t use a chiller so I am no help there.

try a fan and a bottle of frozen water.

Thanks guys. I have been putting ice cubes in a plastic container to help bring it down. I will keep trying this and also use a fan. Thanks. Chillers really seem to be a bit pricey.

Hey welcome. I second both of the previously mentioned methods. If you get a fan and plug it into the same timer that your lights are plugged into it will only run when your lights(which probably contribute a good bit to the heat) are running.

If something happened like a big power outage or someone left a door open and you wanted to quick bring down the temp which had quickly risen, then a bottle of very cold or frozen water just floating in the tank would work.

Good luck. And once again welcome to the board,
Jon

For that size tank a chiller would be way too much and there are easier and cheaper ways.

Depending on the fan this is a < $20 fix including a simple ATO to replace evaporation.

$12

$1.39 Soda + $3 for PVC Fittings

EDIT - Forgot to give credit for the second pic. It is on Bellamy & Keleigh (icy1155) nano tank

Also if you are away from your tank during the day like the most of us you can put the fan on a timer. So add 5 dollars. So that is at most 20 bucks vs a couple of hundred.

Fan also uses probably less then 1/100th the amount of electricity as well. You want to talk about savings, lol. With my electric bills I analyze everything the uses electricity. (“Do I really need the 15th tank?")

My answer is always yes to that question… lOl

Sorry for the HJack 1st8ErReefer!

I think the temp of the room makes a big difference as well. I had a temp spike in my tank when the wx got over 80 and the house temp increased. I turned on the house AC on and I used a couple fans to bring the temp down. Not the most energy efficient but it lower the temp and stabilized it.
