Clam tearing in the middle of the mantle

So my ORA purple maxima has a hole in the middle plus its its normal holes. It must have just tore today It now has about a 1/4" hole. I tried to google maxima clam tearing and just come up with peoples questions about the siphon and the mouth and tear drop maxima’s. I have it on my sandbed next to my gold maxima and derasa that I got from the DPA group buy over the summer. The 4 other clams look healthy with no issues.

Does anyone have an idea why these clams do this? Is it due to nitrates or what? the only bad thing in my tank I found as testing was nitrates were high around the 20-40ppm dkh was low also at 6. I am back to doing 2 water changes a week 3-4gallons each.

Only real difference I have done in the past 2 days was turn my t5’s off and just run the MH bulbs (250w each) No new additions since the group buy. Clean up crew will be added this week though to eat all poop and stuff in the tank LOL…

Could there be other animal is in your tank that could possibly pick at the clam that you never see?

Sorry
Could be something picking at it, I had one tear and there was nothing picking on. It did live for a while but did die eventually. Good luck with.

I have not seen any bad snails. None of my fish mess with the clams except maybe my lawnmower blenny he sometimes perches near them to eat the algae off the container they sit in. but I never see a snail or hermit in their spot. Though ever since I got the clam it always seemed to have really thin tissue in the middle. Not sure what cause clams to have the thin tissue, maybe they need more light? The clam still opens up normal its holes are opened like normal not stretched.

I take it they can not heal themselves over time? sucks you had one die due to a tear.

i have a starry blenny and i swear it bit my croceas mantle there was a chunk missing that perfectly matched his mouth it was probably incidental but still. My question is why shut the t5’s off? The clams get used to the light intensity and spectrum and that could cause the clam to react. Not saying this is it but who knows?

I like the look of the tank better with just the MH lights on. I only did the t5’s off for one and a half days.

I still wonder if maybe I should move them higher in the tank. I am starting to pull some low light items out and put them into my 20g tank again so the main does not look cluttered on the sand bed and so my sandsifting star I have is able to get more areas of the sand bed.

Always something to hope for
Its weird you can see the blue pattern inside the hole to almost like it got cut and is laying inside. Hard to tell. But I guess time is the only thing that will tell whether it makes it or not. Just a shame it was my favorite colored.

Yep thats true just make sure nothing picks at it and water quality stays up. Hope for the best for ya.

Thanks

i had a similar rip in one of mine, maybe a thin portion of tissue, some salt fall on it or something else. looks fine now, healed over in a couple months.

The full mantle is out except the section where it was browning and torn. It does not look as brown today but still shriveled so it’s hard to tell.

Some salt fell on it, how?

oh, i typed salt?? sorry. i meant that some rock fell on it. old man brain fart.

So after watching my clam everyday the hole has gotten smaller to a pin sized hole now YahoO. looks like full recovery is coming. Still opens up like normal the side where it was browning it not fully out but looks like its color is back.

YahoO

Great to hear about the clam. Hope it’ll stay well for you.

Glad to hear it YahoO If its healing that quick my guess is “something” did the damage.

Maybe. the 2 maxima’s look like they are thin in the middle so I guess if anything fell it could have torn ???
