when i first got it from her. basically teal, white and brown
after moving it into a different tank, same bulbs; red and redder
yesterday, back to the way it was
It seems this chalice’s colors are very much dependent on some environmental factor that you have changed. I think it looks good with either color.
the edges are really different. before they were rounded, now they’re pointy and thin. i really like it, both ways also
Never having owned a chalice I am by no means an expert - but it looks like with LPS the whole thing looks “deflated” and thinner. When a plate coral isn’t extended and inflated it gets the same look around the edges.
What time of the day are you taking the pictures? Same time eveyday? Are you checking PH or salinity when it looks both good and bad?
Could be a lot of factors. Lighting had changed on top of this coral several times from 400W MH to 6 bar T5s. Nutrient level could for sure be a factor as it went from very low nutrients to high nutrients and back again. pH is also more stable now then it was before. It’s color seems to have changed no matter what time of day, but the inflation rate may be due to the time of day the images were taken, not sure.
I wouldn’t say with either color it looks either good or bad, just different. I would guess it is like a coral adjusting to different lighting or flow conditions just taking on a different coloration dependent on local conditions. It is common for Acropora to take on different coloration due to nutrient conditions. I haven’t kept a lot of chalice at home, but I know Andy has found chalice to change dramatically.
it changes SLOWLY over time. ive never seen any polyps or real growth to it, but it has been slightly moved again today, at an angle on the sand and leaning on its rock.
