This little guy was just hanging out this morning in the cold. Nice colors!
i just started feeding the birds again, since the snow. i got suet in a cage, thistle for finches and sun flower seeds, and mixed seed and whole corn i toss out back or in screen feeder baskets. its been a while since i was feeding. the birds are taking some time to find the food. but coming. blue jays, cardinals, gold finches, junkos, peckers, and a bunch more types. i like bird watching. right out back from the kitchen window. hand the feeders from the low plum tree branches, and piles on the ground. once they all find the stuff, i get whole flocks out there. its cool. then a hawk might swoop in and grab a bird for lunch too. it happens.
Cool Ken, I only feed them in the winter too. And I have seen a hawk swoop down and pick a robin right off the ground.
Yes, i call them feather bombs. about once a week i’ll find a pile of feathers on the lawn, near the food. thats where a bird of prey cleaned a catch before flying off with it. Looks like a feather bomb went off. but its fun watching and spotting all the types of birds. sometimes a big owl will hunt them also. i’ll see them roosting in the big cherry tree. watching for a meal. and then… silently… swoosh!!! I like spotting the wood thrushes , they are few and far between. pretty big bird. nice speckled breast pattern. and also the northern flickers. i had a pair nest a couple years in a big bird house i made for them. then the squirrels took the place over.
