So recently I’ve noticed a pretty large growth of green coraline algae. At first it was just on the glass (really annoying) which the tang unsuccessfully tries to eat. Now it is growing on 95% of the rocks and the purple/pink and green seem to be fighting over a few of the rocks. Is there anything that helps the green and not the purple pinks? Vice versa? Why does the green come out? Why does the purple? I’ve read the green is simply more dominant, but I haven’t noticed it so much until recently.
Note I don’t think its a nuisance and its actually pretty attractive.
I would be interested to know that answer as well. I thought the types of corraline were dependent upon where your rock was imported from and the types of corraline dominant in that region, but really i have no clue.
I only get green on my glass, never takes on my rock. Rocks are covered in purple. Personally, i hate the green and consider it a nuisance.
Okay went throught the washer, wow! Really clean. Now, I used bleach to wash it, can I just soak with de-chlorinator to get the bleach out? (I don’t have a spare tonight, and need these bubbles to stop)
I wonder if scraping it off the glass helped to spread it? I find it a nuisance on the glass because it gets a darker green color, but on the rocks it gets more of a pale/lime green. At least I can’t complain about having too much purple, but I think I’d rather a slightly more purple based tank.
i think my friend just washed his in washer with cap of bleach in washer then rinsed very well but not sure if he rinsed with any decholinater. maybe other members will be more helpful about this joe.
Coraline is just like anything else that grows. There’s different variations of it. Like a rose can be red, yellow, white etc. Coraline comes in a variety of colors. Now WHY the green only seems to grow on our glass?? I can’t answer, it may have something to do with the Calc and Alk levels we keep our tanks at, it could be that the green is less invasive then the purple and pink so the glass is the only place left for it to grow.
Give it a little time and I’ll bet it is chased out by the purple. I have some crazy maroon coraline with orange spots in it. Or at least I think it’s coraline, maybe a monti or something? Anyway, after a year or so I bought a couple of pieces of raw live rock and they brought a lot of different types into the tank. Usually you get green first around two or three months, then a few months later the pink comes in, then the purple. If you have some you want to spread, kill your powerheads and scrub the area lightly with a toothbrush. It will get old soon, be forewarned.
i use a lot of that poly matt type material for filters. I buy the quilt stuffing mat, 1/4 inch thick from wally wurld. I just toss them in a big plastic jar, add some bleach, and water , shake and let it sit for a few hours. then just rinse thoroughly, and bang the thing on the side of the tub to knock any stuff stuck out. and rinse some more. i dont dechlorinate. its poly. doesnt absorb bleach. besides, bleach is neutralized by any orgainc it meets soon as you put it in the tank water. turns to table salt and water. its free chlorine and chloramines you have to worry about. just rinse it well. but dechlorinate if you feel the need.
as for socks, i buy white tube socks at the farmers market by the dozen. got a whole drawer full. that way i never have to waste time sorting them out after laundry. just grab any two. they always match.

you must clean them regualy to avoid build up. atleast once or twice week . i use filter material like polyfiber and must rinse every other day on overflow and in my all in one sump. it plugs up within 3 too 4 days.[/quote]
Anything which requires such maintenance is a bad idea in my opinion for most hobbyist. Routine is often used to describe what hobbyist should be doing and rarely is a strict routine ever actually followed.
I have 2, and alternate weekly. When they are dirty, I’ll rinse them thoroughly. If that doesn’t cut it, its into the washer w/ a shot of bleach and they come out nice and clean. I let em set for a day just to be safe. I’ve heard that hot water neutralizes the bleach too, so rinse w/ hot water.
It’s not such a big hassle. and they are doing what they are supposed to do. which is strain out waste and bacterial masses. which have eaten waste. no problem. improve your bio-filtration and the filter floss wont clog up as often.
I’ve got 5 different species/types of zoas/palys (3 def zoas, 1 button polyp, 1 zoa/paly unsure) in my tank. Recently one of my favorite had slowly started closed up and now only a few polyps stay open the rest (8?) stay closed. I can’t see anything on the zoas and all other zoas/palys are open. Any ideas?
Really just looks like their purple base color, although one looked slightly discolored, it didn’t look like a creature was on it. I picked up the frag plug they are on and there are pods running around on it, but that is all I could see creature wise.
