Could I remove the center brace and use a single halide fixture, is it necessary for the tank’s structure?
Question #2
I have the tank drilled, and no overflow- just an elbow. Is there anything I can do to quiet this badboy down some? Anyone else have the same type of setup?
#1. i would leave the center brace. if taken out i would replace with glass or acylic piece to have brace. #2. is your drain one inch? if so i would go to 1 1/2 inch as soon as it leaves bulkhead or you could increase to even larger to help. use a tee with a cap on top and drill a 1/4 hole in center of cap. air with larger pipe will hush the noise
#1
I wouldn’t without adding another brace. Replace center brace with acrylic (preferred) Maybe a stainless band with a brace at the thirds. See attachment.
#2
A Durso can reduce some noise.
But to truly quiet there are 3 options: #1 reduce flow so the sucking stops #2 add a second drilled overflow
enlarge the hole and use a larger diameter pipe
Shame you didn’t make the last meeting. We spent about 15 minutes or so on this topic with an expert.
The large the hole the better.(less noise) And you can set it up with a durso. Check out this site if you need more info. http://www.dursostandpipes.com/

Okay guys I understand. What thickness do you think I would need if I use acrylic to brace the top? Can you supergle it in place?[/quote]
superglue the entire length of the acrylic… might hold. only needs to be 1/4" thick or thinner. 6" wide or so… doesn’t need to be strong from bending, it’s to keep the front and back of tank from separating. so as long as it doesn’t stretch, u should be good.
Got it, I think I’ll use two strips so I can get away with a single halide bulb. I have to check to see how I attached the plumbing behind the tank for the tee, if it’s all permanent, I’ll try the in-tank tee.
