does anyone have any experience with the CPR AquaFuge 2 PS Refugiums with protien skimmer. This product would help me out alot with space if it works, any input would be greatly appreciated.
I have little experience with the HOB(Hang on Back) refugiums as I think they typically don’t have a large enough volume, but I have to say that 99% of the time if a piece of a equipment that does something else as it’s main job and throws in a skimmer as an extra they really don’t do a great job. IMHO

i kinda figured that, one reason why i wanted i ask everyone on this forum is to see if i could get any additional feedback. so your opinion is all HOB refugiums are worthless? this would be added to a 55 FOWLR tank
I would stop short of calling them worthless, the real question is what is your expectation? If you are trying to lower nitrates, it may help a bit. If you are trying to provide a predator free area for pod/critter proliferation, great. If it’s fish only, you’re probably not all that concerned with nitrates anyway, right?
Your historical concept that HOB or remote refugiums should be proportional to the size of the tank, seems like sound advise. To be truly useful, I believe a refugium should be at least half the foot print of the main tank. With a deep sand bed of fine sand and macro agae, or a plenum sand bed with a bit of rock and some macro algae.

Quite true. The definition of a refugium is an area of protection against predators for small invertabrates. In that sense they would work well. For denitrification, they are more or less useless.

well i’m concerned with providing a space for small invertebrates as well as some nutrient export, i had planned on constructing a sump/refug beneath the tank with an overflow box but all of the plumbing could be cumbersome from what i’ve seen , also I’m nervous about flooding a rental apt if the power goes out or anything leaks, mobiliy is another issue as i will be moving in the future. I figure a HOB refug will be alot easier to break down and transport.
