Ok, saw this crab today in the bag of live rock that I got from Dr. Macs. Wanted to see if anyone could ID it and tell me if it was good or bad before I released it into the tank. He is sitting in a ziploc bag for the moment in my tank so the water doesnt get too cold. ill probably change the water every couple of hours or so until I get a definite answer.
He is very small, maybe just a little bit bigger than the size of a Quarter.
His claws look like that of a gorilla crab, but the body is slightly differnt color then I am used to. Do a google search for “gorilla crab images”.
Regardless if you don’t want him and can bring it to the meeting I think I could find a home for him if no one else wants it.
For what it’s worth I don’t think you need to worry about changing the water as often. I have kept similar crabs at room temp in very small containers for a month at a time. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone who was in love with the crab, but for something like this I don’t think it’s a crime. You could change half the water every other day between now and when you decide to give it away or release it in your tank. Though I think you will find that you don’t want it in your tank.
I believe it may have IDd it. I believe there is a Xanthid family of crab. Oval bodies, claws have black tips, and the walking legs are striped just like this one. Doesn’t seem to be a name for it, just the family of crab its in.
Yep, that is where he ended up. In the sump.
