CRASH!

You mentioned you had no flow at all in the second tank. Do you own no more power heads? If you removed all the corals that were just about dead and placed them in a separate tank with fairly high flow I think you would be removing a lot of your problems. You could just be having a massive amount of chemical warfare going on. Tomorrow if you don’t have a second power head for your other tank, pick one up. Neither fish nor corals can live in stagnate water and I have a feeling you are going to need to remove one or the other.

Give me a call when you get off school tomorrow.

Even if you save one coral it will be worth the cost of the powerhead.

If not, you can always use it when you set back up…

i came home to discover that my tank was almost crystle clear. what a sigh of releaf. ill be picking up a 10 gallon, power head, carbon and some other misc. at premium later today. fish have calmed down. ill be doing a small water change today about 3 gallons. when should i change carbon?

What is telling you that you need to do another W/C? Slow down a bit and let things settle. Monitor your H[sub]2[/sub]O conditions with testing.

Your carbon should be OK for at least two weeks, I’d think.

And if the 10G is for a QT tank, don’t forget a small heater, as well. Maybe that was included in “some other misc.”

I have to agree with Ronert - unless your parameters are off don’t worry about another water change just now. You changed a lot over 2 days. Youw went to school today and left everything alone and it now looks like it’s getting better. Don’t touch it right now. Give the natural balance a chance to recoup.

i thought i would do a small one to help rid my tank of any toxins or what ever else. most corals are closed up. about 5 colonies of zoos are open so i figured a water change would help.

ive never been in this situation. i didnt know that i should let everthing chill for 2 day. i posted all this here so that i could get advice. thanks to everyone. im still not out of the clear but i have a good shot(at least i think so).this will also be a good reminder to people to calm down and wait it out.

should i still continue regular feeding? also i guess i left the day light on, should i keep it on the rest of the day or switch it off?

If you have a few colonies opening back up, that’s a good sign.

Feeding can be skipped for a while with no adverse effects. So if you skip that for a day or two, no biggie … unless you have seahorses or anthias (or any other fish that needs frequent small feedings).

Light shouldn’t matter too much. I’d maintain whatever schedule you’ve been running them.

But you don’t have anything listed in your sig. that can’t go a few days without food.

little up date. my nitrates were at about 20. ph was a little high too. i picked up a digital themomator and it looks like my day time temp is about 80 or 81 but i cant really remember. night time temp is 78.i never knew my compacts had such an effect. is this a good night time temp?

should be fine … a 3 degree swing is tolerable IMO

Agreed. A 3 degree temp swing is not going to hurt anything.

Whats the high ph? Have you added anything to have a high pH? Did you do a small water change when you were at 20 nitrates? I would just watch nitrates and do small (sub 10%, 2 gallon?) water changes to keep them down.

What is your source water (well/city)? What does it test out to?

source water is city water. test out fine. yester day the olny thing i had ws Amm. at 1.0. did a 10-20% water change. will test after i get back from bowling.

many zoos opening a few whole colonie opened. stuff looks much better. a few weeks of recovery and ill be back up and running. ill do some more testing later like i said.

ammonia @ 1.0? That’s high.

Detectable ammonia is bad. The water change is a good move. Post the results when you get back. If it is still high do another water change.

I really hope that decimal point is in the wrong place. Ammonia at 1.0 I don’t think anything (except my retarded damsels) could survive.

Check for dead things (snails?) in the tank if your ammonia is that high.

stuff is looking better and better. we’ll see what my total loss is in a week or 2 but it was not that bad considering about a week ago everthing was going to die.

Hows it looking Bret?

I was wondering the same thing.
