The problem with using tap is every time you top off you are increasing the concentration of Nitrates. The nitrates in the water dont evaporate, but you keep introducing more with every top off.
pops just told me he got a new $430 DI at work. i dont know what that means but it cant be bad. theres a chance i can get some water but ill have to wait until tommrow to see.
should i do a water change now with the 20 ppm nitrate water or get the di water and do a water change thursday or friday?
I would do one today to help with the amm. That does help with the amm right? Assume there is none in your tap water. Have you checked your tap water for amm?
amm 0
ite 0
ate 20
cal 460
salt 1.025
mag and phosphates i didnt test. i will tommrow.
i should be doing a water change tommrow or saturday. i got a new bucket of salt but i noticed my auger was rusty so i couldnt get a good mix. ill be getting a new one but i mixed up some saltwater anyway.
I would personally slow down on water changes. You’ve done a lot of them this past week it seems. I would at least cut back from doing 10 gallon water changes every time. That’s 40% of your water being taken out every time you do a water change. I would cut back to 5-6 gallon water changes.
everthing except nitrates are spot on. even though it’s reading 20 its alot lighter then befor. i figure after a few more water changes and some time i shoud be ready for some some new coral.
Well BZ, if you have been running a couple heaping tablespoons of that GFO for a week now, that should have absorbed a whole bunch of the extra PO4 in the tank water. I would change it out for some new stuff and let it run some more. it will bring PO4 down to very near zero.
and you might do some vodka dosing(under supervision) to grow bacteria that will consume large amounts of Nitrates and Phosphates over time. I was doing that a while too. it takes time. but i do believe it cleaned up my frag system looking much better now. i was dosing about 5 ml(1 teaspoon) per day to start and up to 10 ml(2 teaspoon) max for the 90 gallon volume system.
at first it caused a large bacteria bloom that gelled into clear globs of slime floating on the tank water and in the sump. but i just scooped it out with a fine net. that removes the NO3 and PO4 it consumed. in time the slime went away and the tank cleaned up for me. the corals can eat some of the bactera in the water too. and then i stopped dosing.
or start the fuge up again. all are means of capturing and exporting waste products. once you get the excess down, perhaps the rock and sandbed can resume carrying the denitrating load. the GFO will take care of the Phosphate.

I still say SCREW THAT!! My vodka costs me like $40 for a 750. The only thing I am dosing with that stuff is me!! :BEER
