critter/?? id

on the brighter side of my glass, maybe 1/2 of an inch in diameter at largest. lots of them also. not soft not hard, just a rise above the glass when i touch it. the picture exaggerates their depth though. it seems more 3d than they actually feel. they seem to be about as thick as 2 sheets of paper.

Clam eating nudibranches.

Sorry I couldn’t resist.

I have no idea what that is on your glass. Looks like a snail or mollusk or something to me.

i guess that’s why we elected you, mr sense of humor.

It looks like the red type coralline algae, maybe? Can’t really tell from the pic.

very brownish looking, but it did break up like coraline does when i scraped it. ive never seen it that color though.

Pseudolithoderma, remove as much as possible as they can smother corals. This isn’t one I’ve ever had an issue with, but I’ve encountered on occasion.

jon, thanks a lot! searching under that name gives me no images. algaebase has no pics. do you have any link to a pic of it, not that i don’t trust your id, which is pretty dmn amazing. that’s the benefit of obtaining knowledge!
i read that Pseudolithoderma used to be called ralfsia. is it the same stuff? cause a pic of that is really similar.
won’t scraping it off/breaking it up allow or even help it to spread elsewhere?

Yes it has been called Ralfsia as well.

Scrapping off bubble algae could cause it to spread. Half melting an aptasia could cause it to spread. Watching both of these from the other side of the glass and doing nothing… they’ll spread anyways.

If you can siphon them as you scrape them out.

From what I have read this stuff will grow in even decently low nutrient conditions and you won’t have much luck trying to find something to eat it. Manual removal is your best best.

the only question i have is: out of all the weirs algae in the world, how could you come up with the id on that one? i find that amazing. i bow down to that type of knowledge.

You could try one of these:
