The state House has unanimously approved a bill restricting the possession or sale of shark fins in Delaware.

The bill approved Thursday does allow the possession of shark fins for scientific purposes. It also permits a handful of commercial fishermen who hold shark fishing permits to possess or distribute, but not to sell shark fins.

If the bill is approved by the Senate and becomes law, violators would guilty of an environmental misdemeanor.

Shark finning, in which a shark is caught, its fins cut off and the carcass dumped back in the water, is already prohibited by federal law and Delaware regulations. But the possession and sale shark fins from other countries is still legal in Delaware. The bill is aimed at eliminating the local market for shark fins.
