Desk top rotifer growing

It started about 3 weeks ago when Chris & Barb visited and brought a gift… a 2 liter bottle full from a rotifer harvesting. It was suggested that i started growing them. BUT… another couple 5g buckets of water sitting around is out of the question… at least til summer, i can go nuts in the garge if i want. So Chris said to try it in the bottle, even gave me enough phyto to last a long time… (really got my arm twisted).
So after about ten days, it seems to be maintaining and increasing in density…so thought i’d finally share…
It’s a simple setup, on the desk in my bedroom. I just mimicked Barbs thread on a smaller scale…http://www.reef-geeks.com/forums/aquaculture-breeding-geeks/219-how-grow-rotifers.html

2 liter soda bottle
air pump, stone and regulator
Gallon milk jug with 1.018 rodi salt water
phyto from concentrate ( KEEP REFRIGERATED )

I’ve been harvesting about 2-3 cups everyday. i feed the rotifers once daily about 2-3ml of the phyto, an hour (give or take) before the harvest. Then top off with the pre mix water from the jug, it lasts for about a weeks worth of top-offs. I dump the harvest in my tanks, sometimes in the fuge right about lights out time. The coral and fish do respond to it, and its supposed to be healthy for them, and this is good practice for when the day comes that i’ll be raising fry.
Anyway… so far it’s as simple as it gets, easier then hatching brine shrimp… no lighting needs to deal with. Just a couple minutes a day is all it takes to feed and harvest, the worst part is walking to the fridge to get the phyto:rofl:

Short clip of the rotifers swimming around in the bottle…

That’s a really good diea John. Never thought about raising them in a smaller container.

How’s the colony doing for you after a few weeks of this?

Its going good! really easy, and low maintenance. I don’t really need a lot since i’m not raising fry, so no sense wasting all the water everyday…this is just enough to feed the tank/ corals something… I’ve even skipped a day here and there with no negative effects on the culture… If it starts to look too dense, i just dump off more when i harvest… very simple, much easier then hatching brine shrimp!
