DIY LED Questions

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but…

I wanted to get everyones thoughts… thinking about buying 2 of these kits:

I am trying to plan my 125g aquarium. I had a couple of questions…

  1. Is 96 LEDs too many or not enough LEDs for a 6ft 125g aquarium?
  2. If I have done the research, it looks like the only thing I need to get that this kit doesn’t have are heatsinks, so I am thinking about possibly doing either 2, 3, or 4 heatsinks. What size heatsink should I be looking for? I want to make sure I don’t spread the LEDs out so far that I get dark spots after putting the optics on it…

Thanks in advance.

I think I found my answer to the first question. ReefLedlights.com says they recommend 1 LED for every 12-15 sq in. of surface. So for a 125g tank (72x18), I should have between 86 and 108 LEDs. They say 48 LEDs would be like having a 400watt MH… here is the source:

Still not sure about the heatsink. For the tank I want, I don’t know if it should be split up in 2, 3, or 4 sections…

I’m not sure we have any LED DIY-ers in the club right now verdict_in
There’s quite a few active members on reef-geeks.com that have been doing them. If you don’t have any luck i’m sure somebody has the answers over there.

Sounds awesome though!

Ah that kind of stinks… I know that Ponies999 had a couple of posts over in the DIY section about some stuff her and her husband or boyfriend were doing, and also a couple of other people talking about LED setups they were making. No big deal though, I’ll slip over to Reef-geeks and see what they have to say. Thanks!

Try heatsinksusa. IIRC, 10" sink was about $3 per inch.
