DIY moon lights

Well awhile back we were talking about using the LED Christmas lights, well back around Christmas time my family and I went to a local shop that does alot with Christmas and I picked up a 50 foot string of blue lights, (the lights are indoor and outdoor so they are sealed). I made a frame a while back and just never had time to finish it, well with the times being what they are right now for me I’ve had some time so assembled the frame and drilled some holes today and put the lights in for a temporary demo. The frame is not done need to do some sanding and finishing so the water doesn’t warp or rot it, and need to glue the lights in place and staple the cord in place. So here is some pics I’ll get pics of the tank tonight when the lights go our.

Gonna need to put them up higher cause they seem alot brighter then my old moon lights

Jingle bells, jingle bells, billrob built some moonlights.
Oh what fun it is to bask in the bright moonlight all night

::rofl::

Funny Guy

Alright I couldn’t wait so I shut the lights off for some pics. The pics are brighter then the tank actually looks but turned out nice.

Looks really good Bill

I’d be interested in seeing in person as the pictures look like oyu left the actinics on ::rofl::

Great idea though bill. Are the lights a continuous circuit type so if 1 burns out the rest wil stay on?

These are LEDs not the mini incandescent XMAS lights most of us know and have correct?
If so do they use any kind of driver, can they be dimmed ?

Yup. they are good. low power, but a lot of them on a string. probably 470 nm blue light. I think Chris and Barb started using a string of those over their tank 3-4 years ago. back when LED moon lights were priced sky high. a short string from the dollar store did the trick. do they make all the corals flouresce? or just the greens and blues? red corals take something else.

Thanks John

Craig come check it out when ever you would like. As far as if one goes out they all go out I’m not sure but there is 3 separate wires and 3 separate resisters so I’m thinking if one goes out 1/3 of the string may go out. I don’t think there replaceable.

Hudzon they are LED’s they look just like a set of standard Christmas lights but with LED’s. They are on or off but there not very bright they don’t need to be dimmed. I have 2 one watt LED moon lights built into the hood of my 39 cad and the whole string is about the same brightness as the 2 LED’s. My camera brightened the picture up ALOT. Worse comes to worse I can just cover up some and dim it down but it looks fine as is.

Ken I got them at Ronnie’s Market they were $15.00 for a 50 quantity string but these are indoor/outdoor lights so they look like there sealed. The nice thing is they do give a shimmer and I do get some glow out of the red Trac. The greens and blues look great.

I wonder what this would look like with my multi-colored string of led christmas lights!? :BEER

::thinking::

Like a lighted rainbow ::rofl::

Ok got to play with the camera a little and got the ISO gunned down and switched setting.

Closer to the real thing maybe a little darker but pretty close.
