Do you keep a lid on things?

I was curious as who keeps a tank covered or uncovered and why. I keep my Quarantine tank uncovered due to the lights I use don’t work well with the top. The display tank I kept covered for a while but don’t like the way it affects the lighting. So when I add a new fish it goes on for a week or so to keep jumping out from being a problem, then once the guy settles into a home I take it off. Just wondered what others had to say about this. Also does glass block much of the light or only certain wavelengths?

I keep everything uncovered. For several reasons. Glass does block light, it also traps heat. Allowing a tank to remain uncovered allows for evaporation which is the tanks natural way of cooling itself off. If it’sbuttoned up tight witha glass lid then there is no where for the water to evaporate to and therefore not disspate heat.

If you’re concerned with critters jumping you can create a breathable cover out of mesh screen that will not block much light.

+1 with the Prez. I also keep uncovered for oxygen exchange and for the tank to breath. I also made a screen door frame fitted to the top size of the tank with plastic chicken wire mesh screen. DIY from HD for maybe $10.

+1 :-)lol

I like the idea of a mesh top, maybe “egg crate” would be good since it is made to pass through it. Where is the best and least expensive place to get it? I would assume home depot or lowes. I am interested to see your diy cover so i can steal some ideas for my own.

I personally think egg crate blocks too much light - but that’s just my opinion.

+1. Also, here my DIY mesh cover.

::thumbsup::

DIY mesh looks nice!

Thanks Dave. It keep those jumpers in the tank till they get used to the environment. Full light penetration and very easy to make.
